Well here's the situation. I am a part time mechanic right now and I do everything that the full time guys do. I am in the process of getting into the steamfitting union and it should be a couple more months yet before I get a job in that. Anyway, my boss told me today that he wants me to go full time because one of the full time guys is going part time. I also think I deserve a raise if I go full time. What do you think. Should I just stick it out for the last couple months and just work the extra hours or should I ask for the raise with the hours??

Go for the raise. My dad does the hiring/firing for a dealer, he manages the service department. He always tells me "The squeaky wheel gets the oil". If you dont ask for a raise I doubt they'll give you one.

I also think you deserve it too, if you're going full time. Otherwise what's it going to cost them to hire some new guy to work full time? Probably more than to just give you a raise when they already know you're good.

Depends what you want to do, what type of money you need, and how good you are (i.e. how much "hardball" you can play and get away with). One time I worked a job and asked for a raise and mentioned considering working somewhere else, and in response they said "Okay. Well good luck at your new job." and escorted me out of the building. But it was a place where they didn't have much for me to do, to begin with.

At a different job I played hardball and they were willing to give me almost anything, cause I'm good at what I do and they knew it.

Go for the raise. If you dont ask for a raise I doubt they'll give you one.

thats the truth, only raises i ever got were when i asked, same with almost all my mechanic friends

This can be big money for just a dollar raise in a "flat rate" field
even if your planning on leaving, thinks might change, and gives you a better bargining chip at next jobs

$9 is way too cheap. I'm not trying to make you feel bad but we hire engineering interns at $15-$18/hr. These are college kids with bare minimum real world skills.

Hopefully this fires you up to ask for more than $9 per! Good luck man.

jesus 9$!!!! I get 18$ managing/technician for a large small engine service shop!

You need more man!!! if you are good, dont feel intimidated for asking what your worth, you SHOULD be getting half their shop labor rate at full time!

Im working my way up that my self, hard when the labor rate is 65$ an hour though LOL,

But i do make time anda half on O/T Just push fora substansial raise, now is the time to swing your nuts around at them and get what your worth!!!

Sheit mang. You'll be making $30 an hour as a union steamfitter. I'd tell them to stick it.

Well I asked my boss. He said "I'll see what I can do". I doubt it but I think I am going to take the fulltime anyway because I could really use the cash I guess. Its not like Im going to be there too much longer anyway. Might as well take what I can get.

Your a mechanic or a lube tech?

My buddy john is fresh out of WCTC, been at HALL Chevy for 2 years total ( was working as an intern for 6.50 an hour ). Just went fulltime flat rate and he is at 22.50 an hour.

9 bucks is BS, tell them to shove it if they refuse a raise and find partime employment else where. UPS hires at 8.50 and FULL health / dental benefits. And its only 2-5 hours per day, hours are almost always the same.

Either way, good luck with your decisioN!
