If you couldn't tell - the rod broke in half, so did the balance shaft chain, and the balance shaft assembly. the piston grazed the cylinder wall a little as well. I still am not sure what made it pop like this....all I know is that my "new" motor is ready to be dropped in so I can make one or two more appearances at oscars this year. :banana

Iam sorry man but that is one of the nastiest pops that Ive seen in a long time, maybe the worst ever. I espically liked the oil pan shot, it seriously made me cringe when I looked at it. :wooo

Plus thats some black azz oil you had in there, it looks like choclate syrup. :goof

Intresting... bearing surfaces look ok, but is that some detonation erosion i see on the 2nd piston over from the left? Which appears to be the same cyl where the rod busted?

Its really a chicken or the egg thing here, which came first? To me, the one missing stud in the big end of the rod indicates the cap possiblly pulled apart from the rod, but typically the other stud would bend as it would just rip the cap off. But if that is for sure detonation erosion and its the same cyl that busted the rod then id have to say the rod fatiqued from knock. Tops of the pistions are pretty clean, looks like you may have got a few nitrous runs in? heheh but also it looks like it used a **** load of oil too by the carbon build up in the middle of the pistons which is deff burned oil!

Rods just dont bust in the middle unless they have some severe fatigue, major over speed is the big one that will bust em in the middle, or the cap ripped off and the rod got sent into the crank like a wood chipper and snapped it...

At any rate congrats on the quick turn around time!

the only rod that went was the first one from the right. I had gotten some nitrous runs in but not recently. I found the other stud in the target parking lot....

the crank looks like it took a beating....a lot of scratches and small pieces taken out around where the rod came out. I'm not sure why the oil is that black - I run Castrol Syntec - full synthetic and had changed it about 2,000 miles earlier.

yeah - 20mph in 2nd gear. Yeah - its on srtforums. I tried to make a joke out of it and say that this is the reason why you should remove the balance shaft assembly but I guess they all took me too seriously.

I'd be tempted to pull the heads and do a little work while the engine is out...hey, any work that would amount to gains on a NA car ~ doubles on a turbo car that runs about 14-15lbs of boost...so what might result in a 20hp gain for the NA engine because twice the value on a turbo car with 40hp gains...
