Word I am getting is that Atlanta has run out of gas, and that MANY local government agencies are also running out of gas. (No gas for cop cars, fire trucks, mail truck, ECT ECT)

Take it for what it is worth, but I thinking for the next month or so we are all kind of ****ed.

The reason alanta ran out of gas is because the pipeline was damaged during Katrina.

Of course it's all over the net because people take it and spew forth crap from their mouths. Until I hear otherwise from an official source, I'll take the word of the official I heard on the news last night. They did supposedly haev a mad dash for gas because people thought they were running out. I suppose it's possible some stations were as well, but there was some major gouging going on and a public panic. Prices were reported to be in excess of 4.98/gal according to whomever the official was on talk radio.

Dunno if Atlanta is -out- of gas...but it is true that it's over $4/gal there...

Ya that Georgia station says somthing along the lines of there being rumors which caused a small panic.

There are two major pipelines from which metropolitan Atlanta gets most of its gasoline. At present, due to Hurricane Katrina, there is no electricity to power the pipelines, though officials say they should be restored by the weekend.

Gas supplies in southeast Georgia, which are shipped in at the ports, have not been affected. More dangerous is panic buying due to rumors of shortages or shutdowns, which can in itself contribute to temporary shortages or even sellout at stations where more people than usual buy more gas than usual.

Reading that Snopes article really makes me furious. I have a great idea, when a disaster strikes, let's all send out bullshit f*cking scare-monger emails and tell EVERYONE to fill all their gas tanks, so even if there ISN'T a run on gas, this way we can GUARANTEE one!!

Idiots!!! :fire :punch: :flipoff2: It's people like that who would panic on a sinking ship and rather have *everybody* drown than to try and save the most able/strongest/deserving/women/children/etc...

We should start a converse rumor, that there's somethign wrong with it and drive the price down to dump it ;)

Since email rumors apparently hold so much clout, it could work if done in enough capacity :)

Wow I guess my analogy was more accurate than I imagined. CHeck this news release I just received (emphasis mine):

DJ FEMA Suspends Katrina Rescue Ops Because Of Danger - CNN

NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--The Federal Emergency Management Agency has announced that it has been forced to suspend its rescue operations in New Orleans because of the dangerous conditions caused by the growing desperation of the people still stranded in the flooded city, the Cable News Network reported Thursday.

A CNN reporter said it has become too dangerous for rescuers, who are usually unarmed, to pick up people in boats because some of those in need of help are so desperate to get onto the rescue boats that they have been behaving in a violent manner and risk injuring others.

FEMA officials said they are standing down until they can figure out how to safeguard rescue officials, CNN reported.

The reporter also stressed that he has been involved in rescue operations where victims have been gracious and cooperative.
