We used Zone Alarm here at work (small office, peer to peer) worked fine. I'm sure someone here can expand upon which firewalls are best. I use the free firewall above at home, works great.

ZoneAlarm > *

and it's free, and doesn't fugg up every running program like Norton's :chair:

There's also other advanced programs that really weed out the crap, but you have to know what you're looking at. There's also digging through the registry, but those are usually reserved for the really persistent stuff.
Annnd there's also stopping of a few services that are totally not needed, and only serve as backdoors for evil script kiddies with too much time on their hands.

I also do all this on the side for wayyy less than the 'pros' who rely on a cd to do everything for them and don't really know what it's even doing =p

oops...was that advertising? :goof
*cough*see website*cough* :thumbsup

I've heard good things of the microsoft anti-spyware program. Go try that one too.

Ehhh... Microsoft just bought Claria (Gator :chair: :fire :flipoff2: ) and coincidentally MS-AS does not see Claria as a spyware threat anymore!, it's been reduced to 'low level'

Guess what will probably be incorporated into Windows Vista to report on millions of unsuspecting users?...yeeeea. :punch:

best bet is to run spyware/adaware in safe mode.

Well honestly if you only use 1 program, then you're bound to failure when it comes to the battle against mal-ware anyways. Doesn't surprise me about microsoft, but really, bitchin about them is like bitchin about gas prices. Pay them or go nowhere. There isn't a practical alternative out there yet, and I honestly see it being a long way off.

That said I use a few specialized tools, some commercial, and some general knowledge of the way windows works in the background to get rid of this crap for good, but I only do this stuff for first-tier friends. I could stay employed on my own if I allowed people to refer me to their friends :) And I honestly hate working on that crap.
