My mom has been driving cars for 32 years now, but I was the one to tell her what a piston was about 6 months ago.

Also, she did not know what the tachometer, the other big dial on the dash, does till about 3 months ago. I explained it easily by telling her to listen to the engine rev and watch the needle move while accelerating. What is even more surprizing is that her first car was stick.

My mom did make a neat point about the tach when idleing...
"at 600 rpm, that is 10 times a second. Just picture all of the parts moving that fast at idle. Now imagine 6000 rpm, 100 times a second. No wonders so much damage occures when something breaks inside."
