New toys... gives you a warm fuzzy

Canon EOS Digital Rebel XT (350D)
Canon EF-S 17-85mm F/4-5.6 IS lense
Tiffen 67mm Circular Polarizing Glass Filter

Impressively the body is almost as small as the Canon G5

I have the same camera, just in the "toy" coloration. The lens I originally got with it (18-55mm) was not to bad, I just picked up a cheap Quantaray 70-300mm.

I am very happy with the camera.

The pic quality is tons better than anything I could scan from film, or with just about any other DSLR near the price of the Reb XT.

Stock 18-55mm

With the new Quantaray lens

I REALLY need to get a GOOD macro lens.

I am sure you are going to be VERY happy with the new Camera.

I've been using a 300D for some time. I was dead set on the 20D for a while but this camera comes pretty close for almost half the money. Same 2nd gen sensor.

I found the stock lense that came with the 300D just too soft for my tastes. So I decided to drop more coin on a good lense. I got a really good explanation on why to buy the EFS series over the EF series for anything under 125mm. We also picked up a 75-300mm EF Canon lense. My business partner anthony has that. I'm going to take a ton of shots and I'll let ya know what I think.

Right now all I can do is take pics of this camera (with the G5) as I wait for its batteries to get charged up. :goof

I still wish that I would have got the nice looking body like you have.

What was the reason for the EF-S over the EF? I am going to assume that it has to do with the fact that EF-S lenses have a shorter back focus, sense the mirror on the Dig Rebel XT is smaller than many mirrors. If not, what were the reasons?

the EF lense works fine for film due to film's surface does not care what angle the light comes at it.

On digital cameras; the sensor is ever so slightly recessed from the surface of the CMOS sessor. (think of it as small tubes) the angle at which light comes in on a EF-S lense is more straight onto the sensor.

does that make sense?

lenses above 125mm do not experience this problem as much (supposedly) becuase the lense is elongated thus reducing the angle at which the light reflects onto the CMOS sensor

How would one shoot a pic like this... ?

I don't exactly know what it's called, or I'd search for it, thanx!

simple really... tripod and hold your shutter open for a few secs as they blow by.

you'll see an example of this below, the car on the left was moving.. everything else was still. This pic was taken with a Canon G5, not even a SLR. It's a matter of learning to get your camera off the AUTO setting,

If you really want to learn you should go on a little field trip with me or Yellow Wagon (or both). Night shooting is fun. Even more fun when your not freezing your ass off like I did in this picture.

Nice buy :thumbsup

Can't beleive I missed this thread!? :stare

I just got my new toy last week as well . . .

Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG-DF Macro

The thing is absolutely huge and demands attention for sure ;) Not to mention sharp as a razor :D

(Left to right for size comp, Canon 50mm f/1.8 MkII, Canon 28-80mm f/3.5-4.5 EF II, Sigma 24-70mm f/3.5-4.5 HF Aspherical, Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8 EX DG-DF Macro)

http://aurigenmedia.com/BCM/lens9450.jpg

Nice and stealthy 82mm filter size :goof

You are going to love that IS unit. Nice glass. Don't forget that the EF-S lenses are also formatted that way due to the APS sized sensors in the cameras. Just one reason they are recessed further into the body ;)

Unfortunately they wont work on film cameras :(

Which sony camera? it will probably due just fine.

I have an old Olympus 2.1 (C-2100-UZ) that can handle pretty much anything too.

July 2nd may work... I have to find out if I have to drop off my son with his mother that weekend or not.

Don't know where they're getting those prices, it was only $230 a year and a half ago.

hmm doesnt look like that one gives ya the extra controls. You need to be able to control Shutter speed, Aperature, ISO

hmm doesnt look like that one gives ya the extra controls. You need to be able to control Shutter speed, Aperature, ISO

There's an onscreen menu with...
EV, Focus, Metering Mode, White Balance, ISO, Record Mode (w/burst), Flash Level, and Pic Effect (B&W/Sepia/etc.)

No shutter speed or Aperature

Well at least I know what to look for now... I had no clue back then.

don't rule out a film camera you guys. Film cameras are badass for learning to shoot and how to control light and shadow and film temperature. I struggled a LOT with film temps and night photography. But its makes you a lot better!
