My comp is like completely f*cked up...only the shortcuts on the taskbar work, anything I click on the desktop doesnt load and freezes the computer up eventually...

My dilemma is...I know i need to format the hardrive...But I dont wanna lose my 2000 mp3's and certain other files....Is there anyway I can save them from being erased?

Burn them on cd or buy a new hard disk and install windows onto that, then reconnect the old drive and access the files.

What Windows are you running? It probably could be fixed without having to reformat or buy anything...

also you could buy one of the USB external memory stick deals to move the MP3s.....

yeah but then you're just reinstalling it over crap, and you're left with crap anyways. Why bother? Just save the files u want on CD's and then format it and start from scratch... or update to XP, or even a linux flavor of your choosing.

It's all in the user... i ran that for 2 years without 1 problem and i even had a 139 day uptime only killed by a power outage. I played games, browsed, and did chat without ever having windows unstable. I know i'm the remote case but I am convinced it's moron users that **** up ME more than the OS itself being inherently unstable on it's own.

heh, I have a 233mhz/256ram machine running WinXP... i can have Yahoo, AIM, and Limewire running all at once with minimal to no slowdown.
Runs quite nice once you turn off all the un-needed services & tweak this n' that, etc.

Wouldn't that point to the contrary? You know, because 98 needs more updates?

Regardless, a better bet for you would be XP or a linux flavor anyways.

for the few amount of machines that are on ME (it had a short life span) I see a hell of alot of computers with problems that are loaded with ME.

granted if you know what your doing you can take care of it. But its just no good for the average joe

every OS needs updates, there are new viruses, problems, fixes needed almost weekly for every operating system created. 98 is an older system than ME, and is still recieving updates, while ME, the newer one is not.... which shows microsoft's lack of support and confidence in it

Or is it that 98 needs more updates because it's that much more shitty? Or maybe still that viruses aren't being written for 9x/ME based OS's anymore because they're a thing of the past? Either way they're both shitty 16bit based OS's. Granted ME was 32bit based with a bit more emulation of 16 than 98, and ran way better for me than 98 ever did in it's greatest day.

Just go borrow a copy of XP corporate, throw SP2 and MS anti-spyware on it before you do anything else, and be done with it. 98 is not worth the time it takes to take it out of the package.
