Ok so i'm getting my engine built to a 383....my friend and i are having a disgression on how much hp i should be around now....anyone have an idea?

Without knowing the heads/flownumbers, cam, compression, exhaust, induction, ignition i would say 120hp.

Really, without some ballpark ideas of what you are using for the heads, compression, etc there is really NO way of telling.

Well the guy told him 500-600 HP...which I just cannot see out of a NA block with a "small" cam...nonetheless

120? i think my peddle bike does almost that

again...give the heads you plan on using and any work you plan on having done to them, ball park cam specs, Compression ratio, and I'll be able to give a ball-park estimate of HP and torque assuming correct carb/exhaust/ignition. Without it, I am pulling numbers out of my ass.

i'm not sure really either, it was set up by a performance shop...the cam is for a 2700 to a 2900 stall (my stall is a 2800) hooker headers cat back exhaust

Almost 2 hp per ci that would be pretty impressive

well, if it was me building your motor, and you wanted a high HP street and strip motor I'd aim for the following

Vortex heads, three-angle valve job, bowls opened to 2.02 valves and blended, gasket matched, and trim the pushrod pinch. That should net ~250cfm flow. Box-stock Eddy AL heads net's about the same flow and may be cheaper when all said an done.

Cam: Comp XE 284 (~240 .050 IIRC)

Compression with the iron heads and cam ~ 10.0:1 max, with 9.5:1 minimum. ~11.0:1-10.5:1 minimum with AL heads.

Carb: A holley 770 avenger as it's dead easy to tune, perfect for a novice and would be plenty streetable.

good headers and ignition, something like this should put 450hp easily, with around 450+ft-lbs of torque.

It would require, depending on gears, around a 2800-3000rpm stall t/c with at least 3.73 gears ideally for a street bruiser.

But what's the HP they're going to end up with? again, without the specifics, I don't know.

I would want to know exactly what they are putting in my motor, but that's just me. ;)
