this is a really cool bridge tower that I have decided to photograph several different ways. Here are the first ones I shot. Taken this past Saturday night (2-26-05) at about 9pm.

How did you get the sky to look like that?

Right now I'm in a photo class, we just learned the rule of thirds, simplicity, balance, lines, etc.

very high F Stop (8 or above) too keep light sources down and about a long exposure, in this case 25 secs as he posted above

actually to get the sky to come out more, you need to shoot a more wide open aperture...in this instance it was shot at F4. The key is a real long exposure....in this case I was shooting all my shots at about 25 seconds. A couple other ones I took were shot at about 15 seconds and the sky is black. Long exposure is your friend. If you are shooting film though, make sure you shoot a film with a very low ISO rating, like Velvia slide film at ISO 50. Slow film + long exposure = great shots! The tendency is to want to shoot faster film which in turn at longer exposures produces a lot of grain. Experiment and have fun!

compare my F8 / 12 secs

note that F-Stops half the amount of light each step
1.4 2.0 2.8 4 5.6 8 11 16 22

thus Jason let in 4 times more light in plus he had twice the exposure time

You absolutely nailed it; I was going to say the exact same thing. Those shots are so crisp I can't believe I'm seeing that on my monitor screen.
