As far as I know there were no manual montes in the 80's.

my dad had a 78 monte with a 305 and a 4 speed, every time he was in the gears toward the front, the stick would push the ashtray in.

What Derrick said is right....

Unfortunately they didn't put in a T-5 in the 80's SS's :(. But many people have converted their g-body Montes to 5 and 6 speeds :D....as Derrick has apparently :thumbsup .

GM actually built 4 speed monte ss's but they were only available in mexico. Not sure an exact production number, but I read that somewhere. Not available in US due to crash or insurance or some other BS.

Yea, in 1984 the Monte SS was available in Mexico and had a 350 carbed motor and 4 speed manual, optional. Not much power from the 350 but it beats a 305 ;). No emmisions and it had a full Grand Prix interior for some reason. No rear spoiler and different wheels/side mirrors too. I think 84' was the only year the SS was available down there. Other years the base model was though, from what I recall. But transfering a car from Mexico to the states is almost unheard of I think, customs and other road blocks including having a different VIN/ID system plus emmissions stuff.
