Actually, that is on the extreme side...but working in surgery we see quite a few people who are impervious to pain, but again, not to that degree.

One of the thing that the small nerves (type C fibers...one of three different types of nerves) that conduct pain need in order to be effecient is to produce substance P...it makes it so that a greater amount of conduction can occur throughout the nerve. About 10% of the people produce little to no substance P...so they feel pain, but not like you and I would. They feel something break, it hurts...but not so much, kind of like if someone punched you in the arm really hard. Hurts, but not extremely....or like it should with a fracture. These people manifest themselves by not needing ANY type of post-surgincal pain management while having NO complaints...also, for those who do look for some relief (people who produce substance P, but not a lot) certian type of narcotic meds will then have NO effect (types that inhibit substance P receptors)

My theory is this is the type of person that excels not in sports in general...but in the extreme stuff such as the stunt motorbike stuff (evil kenivil types, stadium stuff) super trick snowboarding, etc...hey, that takes practice to do that stuff, and one bad break would scare a normal person from doing it again...but these people aren't normal and see little reason to be scared...

neat stuff though :goof

another thing that people overlook is that our brain makes our own oppiets (spelling) drug that stops pain, opium is close to that chemical make up so thats why we are able to get high off opium but any ways it shuts off the pain nuron system by breaking the chain presynaps of the cell

cell ----> cell -----> cell -----> break in chain (cell)
