There seems to be quite a bit of interest in this, from my WTB thread so here's the scoop

About the car:
92 LX Notchback, 5 speed car, black interior, bimini blue exterior, California car, about 95% rust free. Old setup was a stock block 302, Vortech Si v3, Trickflow heads, e303 cam, trickflow rockers, the usual setup. It put down 470rwhp and 446 ft/lbs. I was looking to go faster, make more power and I knew that wasn't happening on this stock block setup. I decided to let the old setup go, and was going to go the LS turbo route, but I wanted something different, and I wanted to make people mad in the process.

Here's the plan I've come with as of now, parts in bold are what I've already acquired (Huge thanks to Aj @ Endless for great prices). End goal is around 900rwhp, complete street car, no cage, full interior

Motor:
2JZGTE VVTI
Stock Crank
SP custom 10:1 Pistons
BC 625+ Rods
Titan Billet mains
Titan cam gear
ARP hardware
GSC Stage 2 Cams
GSC Beehive valve springs/Ti Retainers
SP Intake manifold
SP Intercooler
SP Quick spool valve
SP boost activated cut outs
PTE 6870 BB

Fuel
Dual Walboro 450s
FIC 1650H
E85

Suspension
Strange Coil overs
Double AA K chromoly K Member and A Arms
Maximum motorsports upper/lower control arms

Stiffler web subframe

Wheels
Weld RTS 71 15x10
26" tire

Transmission
I'm still torn on this, as much as I'd like to do a v160 it's a lot of added cost. I'm really considering the 370z 6 speed with colins adapter kit.

Engine Management
ProEFI

Rear end
8.8
Welded Tubes
33 Spline Strange pro race axles
Strange Spool
Trickflow cover
Disc brakes

A lot of people were angry i was going to put an ls in this clean of a notch. A lot more people are angry that im putting an import motor in. I do things for myself and no body else and like to be different, especially when it comes to my cars

Rods and springs came in today, Titan mains will be in Thursday. Motor is waiting to be delivered, the dumb bitch at Fedex asked if i would have a group of people to lift it off the truck with the driver. :durr

So I'm still trying to figure that out. I already had to pay 50.00 for residential I figured they would know Im not going to have a fork lift at my house. They want to charge another 106.00 to have a truck with a lift gate deliver it. :fire

Started disassembling the motor tonight. This thing had a hard life, I'm afraid to to see the internals.

Of course all the hoses were rock hard and just split into pieces, and most of the clips broke as soon as I pushed down on them so I guess I will be nickel and dimed for all that fun stuff.

Join a couple of the Supra sell/trade groups on Facebook, you'll be able to source the missing/broken parts easily that way. In the past few days I've seen a couple of cars being parted out.

Tweaked Performance can do a full harness conversion for ya plus they will replace any bad connectors. They did my harness for my 2j MK3 swap and it turned out perfect plus they are the kings of 2j swaps into anything. Very smart choice running the ProEFI. That thing has saved some many engines with its built in limp mode features.
If you've never built a 2jz download a FSM for all of the little details because they're are some. Looks like a good start.
Btw get on some Supra forums and maybe you can find a V160 that has some problems on the cheap then just send it to Jack's Transmissions and they'll build it better than oem. Good Luck.

If your doing the harness yourself and need connectors go to DriftMotion. They sell every connector for the 2j harness and are cheaper than Toyota.
Here's Tweakeds website.

Awesome thanks for the links spooln! So when you say conversion you mean they will make the stock ford harness work?

Yes you send them the 2j engine harness and the Ford harness under the dash. Not sure what your doing for the gauges like tach&speedo but call Dr Tweak at Tweaked Performance and he'll let you know what they would need from you and just let him know what your plan is for gauges and what not. When I sent my MK3 harness and 2jz engine harness I got a fully plug and play harness. The only thing I had to wire in was the alternator because it's not apart of the engine harness but that's very simple once you figure out what wire is for what.
Also since your running the ProEFI ask Dr Tweak if he can wire in the check engine light to come on the gauge cluster if a cel comes on.

Oh yeah if you keep the VVTI your gonna need the correct cam gear. It looks like you got the non vvti gear from the pic.
Where did that part bolt to that cracked? Can't tell cuz the pic is too close up.
Your engine is gonna need some time in a good parts washer. I would take it to a machine shop. Well you'll have to anyway cuz I believe the Titan main caps have to be lined honed. Oh duh your doing forged pistons so it's going to a machine shop anyways. Lol You can tell the owner of that 2j didn't change the oil very often because of the oil staining on the inside of the engine. Good thing it's not sludged cuz that stuff is a PIA to fully get cleaned out. Most times we just junk an engine that is sludged up because you'll never get that crap out of all of the oil passages.
I would also get a SP modified oil pump. They shimmed it, open up the return oil gallery and install 3 small screws on the front seal due to them having issues with FMS popping out.
I also noticed your crank sensor trigger gear is different then my non vvti 2jzgte. It should still work but I would call Larry at SP to make sure if you ditch the vvti would you need the non vvti crank trigger.

I'm dropping it off at Sound and having them take care it. I did buy the cam gears before I found the VVTi engine as my original plan was to go non VVTi so I can use one of them, just not on the intake side. The part that broke is the cam cap? with the sensor on the intake cam.

Wow that's probably one of the worse 2j I've seen inside. Sorry to see that but I'd bet that thing still ran like a champ. Lol. Looks like they ran GM DexCool plus never changed it......ever. I can still see cross-hatching in the cylinders which is a good thing. You also should have drained the block of coolant using that drain on the right side. That would have kept the coolant from going into the cylinders when you pulled off the head. It makes the cylinders looks worse then they really are.
It's gonna take a few times in the block washer to get all of that crap out of there. Once fully cleaned I think you'll be just fine.
Where did you buy this engine from? I know when I bought mine the TPS was broken and the valve seats were a little pitted so I called the place I purchased my 2jzgte from and they actually gave me a $550 refund. Since I was rebuilding mine right away it didn't make a big difference but the money helped. Japan has a law where they can't drive their cars after a certain milage or KM but I think they can pay a tax to do so after the set Km and that's why there so many used JDM drivetrains out there for sale. If this is the case with this engine, the person really abused this poor little 2jz. :(

I've seen videos of these lots filled with all sorts of cool cars like old Z cars, Skylines and Toyotas. I would love to get my hands on a 2 door 70s GTR Skyline. They are gorgeous vehicles. Heck I'd even take a 70s Celica GT. Those are bad ass looking rides. Just slap in a 2j or a Beams 3sgte and I would have one sweet old school Japanese muscle car. Just getting it over here would cost another $5-7k on top of the cars price.

Thats not really that bad.... Like Spooln30 said what you really care about is the condition of the cylinders etc and all that stuff looks good at least in the pics. if there was pitting/corrosion etc in the cylinders that would be one thing. Inside the water passages a lot of that really doesnt matter a bit. Keep in mind it may have sat somewhere for some amount of time before being pulled sent over here and sold so a lot of that corrosion might just be from sitting. If your tearing it down just have it hot tanked if you have to and it will be good as new in there.

According to GSCs website both S1 and the S2 are out of stock.
I don't think he needs the S2 cams, I think a 264 ish cam will work just fine with his turbo size he planing on running. The S1 cam I believe is a 269 cam. Now if he was running a 71mm turbo or larger I would say a 274ish or the S2 cam for sure.

I called and spoke with them directly and they said they have a couple sets of VVT-i cams in stock @1075 for the set.

The VVT-i cams aren't on their website. Reid said to go with the S1s, but GSC is telling me stage 2 for my power goals and turbo. They have different specs than the non vvti cams I guess.

spooln30
02-01-2015, 10:07 PM
Oh yeah I forgot your still going with the vvti. What are the gsc s2 vvti specs?
I remember you saying your goal was 1k hp so that would be around 800ish whp so according to GSCs website the S1 fits right in your range. Usually 274 cams are for 71mm to 80mm turbos but people have run 274s on turbos in the 61-68mm range. You will notice a slight idle loop but you've never ran a 2jz so you probably won't even notice the difference. Lol . Now if you plan on going for more power down the road then get the S2 or 274 deg cams. Lmk when your ready to rock n roll.

Good to see its moving foward. Btw what head studs are you going to use? The regular ARPs studs or the larger/stronger CA625+? If your going with the larger studs don't get the L19s because they do corrode but you would've had to made this decision before the head was done because the holes needed to be enlarged. You should give me a call before your going to take the block in so we can go over the plans and make sure things are headed in the right direction.
