I picked up another mustang couple days ago. I was told it had a mild cam in it. I could tell the timing was off when I bought it. I set it at 10 brought it to 14 and still seems like it wants to die. I bump it up and it seems to come alive more and more at idel. I was wondering if anyone had an idea around were the timing should be with a mild roller cam? At 14 it just don't seem punchy and hard starts.

But keep in mind, if the balancer is old, it could be off a degree or three leading you to have less timing than you really do...give it a shot with where is sounds good...

I got it right about 20 at the moment. Gotta test drive it and see what she feels like. Then go back 2 degree. And see what she feels like there

i think that 20 is way too much initial. I would find TDC and pull the timing cover to be sure.

What year/type of mustang/system are we talking about here? TFI? Duraspark?

What distributor/ignition system? It's sounding a lot like you have a mechanical distributor that is either locked out or has a broken mechanical advance.

Verify the advance is working. And let us know what the total advance it. You really should be working from your total advance.... And your initial is then going to be what it is.

Msd 6a with ford 2 wire vacuum distributor. Not positron on how you read total advance would it be giving it throttle or just at an idle with vacuum plugged back into carb?

Sent from my SCH-I405 using Tapatalk 2Disconnect the vacuum to the distributer and run the car to roughly 3000rpm, as that's when full mechanical advance should be safely in by with a "performance" distributer. Adjust the indicator so that the timing marks line up, and that number is your total advance. If you're distributor is locked out (at full advance the whole time), when you return to idle, the marks should still be lined up. If not, line 'em up again and that's your initial...it'll give you an idea how much total advance you've got.
