From the day of the accident: http://www.wisn.com/news/south-east-wisconsin/waukesha/Highway-16-closed-after-fatal-crash/21841258

There was a lot that happened Saturday when we went to meet the first responders, but this sums it up well. The fire dep, ambulance crews, flight for life crew, local police, Sheriff's dep, even the dispatcher was there. We met the crews that took care of us, the same helicopter that flew Amie to the hospital landed and we even rode in one of the fire trucks. They all signed firefighting helmets and gave them to the kids. After a little over 4 months at Children's (2 1/2 in the ICU), Amie is doing great. Not 100% by any means but, she is alive and happy. Her skull separated from her spine and her spinal cord stretched 2" in addition to a broken pelvis, bruising and her stomach being torn open from the seat belt. They had begun to pronouncer her 7 times, 3 in the first day/night. While I was strapped to a board at Froedert for 8 hours, they wouldn't tell me anything besides her being in critical condition. They asked me what religion we are and if I wished to donate her organs. Hard to hear, but here she is.

Never forget what these people can do, my little girl (my son and I also) is a testament to that.

Oh my God! Glad you are all alive. Did they ever find out why the other car crossed the median?

Seeing it on Saturday I immediately thought it was you guys...remember how horrifying it was to read about her injuries! Honestly, I think it's a miracle survived, much less was able to walk to thank her rescuers. Very happy and relieved to see this...seriously, miraculous.

Hope she continues to defy all the odds...what a trooper she is :)

Notice how they mention a fund for burial at the end. That's because this woman had no auto or life insurance.

Wow, I'm glad that you're all here to see another day. Sorry to hear about all you have had to go through, I couldn't even begin to imagine.

“Her heart would slow down a lot and her pacemaker was to kick it back into gear, but there would be times she would pass out and not remember until she would wake up a minute later. We’re thinking maybe that’s what happened behind the wheel,” Courtney told FOX6 News.

Regardless of the fact that she wasn't "medically restricted" on her driving, there's no way in hell this woman should've ever gotten behind the wheel of a car with a condition like this. Her lack of common sense changed your lives forever, fortunately only the stupid woman that hit you died.

She was medically restricted from driving. Her doctors did their job. Her mother was also in the car with her, she passed away too. This woman drove anyway. I'm not trying to shit on anyone here but.......... check her driving record. It's public information which is easily found. Not to mention that she had no insurance, auto or life.

Now to really blow your mind, guess where she was on her way to? Children's Hospital because her grandson had just had his foot run over by a lawn mower (so I've heard, I don't know the true nature of the boy's injuries to be honest). My son, Sam, ended up in the room next to this boy and the family of these people. So, My little girl is on her death bed, I'm across the street at Froederdt with some broken stuff in my body and my family (about 30 of them) are in the room with my son at Children's on the 9th floor next to the family of the woman who caused this for us. Unreal.

Again, I can't say thank you enough to the first responders or the many people at the hospital. Never forget what these people can do. It is a thankless job which is ignored most of the time. They don't ask for a thank you, but they sure deserve it.

Well, tell her thanks! I was there for a few days before I was released. I must have gotten there around............... 2pm Sept 8th? I was out of if, to be honest. I don't remember much. I did have a lot of x-rays, so if she was in the Trauma Center that day, I'm sure I met her, lol!

Either way, tell her thank you for what she does.

Will do! I'd ask her if she remembers you but she wouldn't tell me anyway because of the whole HIPPA thing lol. She's all over the hospital and sometimes on different shifts so it's hard to tell. Either way, I know some of the girls she works with and it's a great place to go if something does happen.

After getting Amie in the air and Sam on the road in the Ambulance, they cut me out of the car. Sam and I were originally on our way to the hospital in Oconomowoc but they decided to take us to the Trauma 1 center after evaluating us in the ambulances. I have no idea what that means, but it sure worked well! Please tell your wife to say thank you to the people she works with. I did go back over there a few times to say thank you but I'm sure I missed quite a few people. It is a great place, they sure took care of us.

Froedtert is the Trauma 1 hospital in the area. Basically they are trained and have the equipment to handle all of the really bad things that happen. (bad accidents, gun shots, etc)

Level I and II differ only in research and teaching...otherwise, any and all injuries/illnesses can be handled on site without transfer, so as far as the patient is concerned, there is no difference. From there, all others are able to stabilize, and frequently even able to offer emergency surgeries depending on the injuries and relative stability of the patient, though that's less likely as the level goes down...though in this densely populated area it's not much of an issue.

An example would be St. Luke's is a Level III and there would be very little that comes through there doors that they couldn't handle in house, though if emergency surgery is needed, it might be delayed vs level I or II, as general surgeons and other specialist and anesthesiologists aren't staffed 24hrs/day...but are on call.

"Skalecki’s daughter says her mother had a pacemaker surgically implanted just two months ago. She had medical problems, but was not restricted in driving.

I was just basing my comments off the article, I assumed that the news had correct information.

I did know that much, but to what extent isn't something that I knew before our "visit" there. :durr

This makes perfect sense. I do know the neurosurgeon that took care (and still does) of Amie was waiting for her on the helo pad when she landed. They had lost her a minute or so before they landed so he stood in the corner and just followed her inside until they were able to get her stabilized again and he could begin to evaluate her.

He also stayed WAY past his shift in order to take care of her and wouldn't leave until he talked to me about how she would most likely not make it. He was back first thing in the morning. In her time there he performed 3 brain surgeries on her (one emergency) and was there when they super glued/duct taped her head back onto her body. He is just one of MANY people that are still dedicated to her and did their part to keep her alive. Good people.

Wow that's amazing. I am so glad to hear that you didn't loose your daughter (or son) that day - crazy that your daughter was able to be there.

I wish you and your family that best in your recovery.

Lake Country Fire and Rescue was selected for Flight for Life’s Scene Call of the Year. Huge deal for them, and I still can't thank them enough.

If you look at the attached pic, that's my little girl flying away in the Flight for Life. The middle is after my son was already on his way to the hospital and my little girl is on the stretcher (with the blanket, the Flight for Life crew are the ones in blue) on her way to the bird after the first responders got her to start breathing while they're cutting me out of the car.

The bottom is me on my way to the ambulance texting my parents telling them to get their asses to the hospital and figure out what the F is going on with the kids. I don't remember that part, lol!

Again, can't say it enough. Don't forget what these people do.

This was on tonight. I told everyone this is the last time, I'm sick of the whole "dog and pony show". I refused to even be on camera for this so my mom took over. TMJ 4 did a great job thanking the first responders.

Didn't realize who it was until I saw the name Shirley Rindt. My mom is good friends with her (Michelle Bania), small world! Glad to see your daughter is doing better and prayers were answered.
