cutting granite

What is the easiest way for me to make a straight cut in a granite backsplash? It's about 20" long and I need to cut it down to about 17". I called a few local granite fabricators and they want to charge me $75-100+ to make a 4" long cut through granite that is 1" thick...

I've only ever seen it done with a wet saw.

According to what I've read online, they say it can be done dry, but it makes an extreme amount of dust. Can I get away with getting a diamond blade and cutting it dry?

It'll probably work but if it was me I'd pretty worried that its going to get a bunch of small chips along the cut line.

thats what I was afraid of too. What if I have someone constantly spraying water as I cut? Or start cutting from the back side of it first?

Seems like vibration is the primary problem, and people put large washers against the blade then clamp it down on the saw

Maybe you should just eat the $$ and have it done. That way if it gets jacked up the store has to cover it. Remeber you only get one shot at it and you haven't done it before. Consider playing it safe because granite isn't cheap.

Not that I'm saying it's the best idea, but there are TONS of youtube DIY videos showing people doing granite cutting using a diamond blade on an angle grinder. The cut I need to do will be 4" long through 1" thick material

I worked with cutting granite for years, mostly with a large bridge saw with an 18" blade. We did use 4" diamond blades on an angle grinder, you could probably use that.

if it was that cheap, use the diamond blade on the grinder... worst case you buy another...

My mother had granite countertops installed in her kitchen, and I was able to get the installer to cut it for free
