Im cruising CL, seeing everything from $800 running Carprice's to $2000 Camaro's.

Figured I would ask here before spending money outside forum. Looking for complete donor to repower a 5th gen El Camino. LS1 not in my budget just a beater running LT1 powerd car. Let me know if you have an eye sore 93-97 GM RWD car taking up space in driveway. Preffer automatic car.

LT1 on a budget? You might find a buick wagon with the trailer towing package that has low mileage. Any thing you do on a LT1 cost a lot of money.

Ironicaly after typing this I stumbled on a Buick wagon that had water pump go out a few years ago, been parked for a while. Wish me luck it doesnt look that I will have to pay much over scrap value for car. Best second bet is a 94 Caprice for $800, running and driving in Racine. Miss my old 94 Impalla SS, was first one sold here in Wisconsin and served us well.

What costs a lot of money on an LT1? I picked up a 95 Camaro that was a borderline basket case car, replaced just about everything and I have virtually nothing into it. And it's a blast to drive.

You replaced just about everything and have virtually nothing into it. You a LT1 FREE tree growing in your back yard? It might be a great motor but its not like buying and building a gen.1 small block.

Basic HP items are cheap for the LT1, certainly cams and pistons cost just as much as LS1 motors to upgrade. Simple 300hp tune is free if you have friends, $200 cam worth 25hp without a tune. The biggest perk of the LT1 motor bone stock is its torque, my big old Impalla would leap out of intersections and tow my #4000 jet boat all day without heating up, fuel mileage was fantastic much like modern LS platform.

keep in mind that the platform you'll be installing it in will be considerably lighter than that ImpySS was.

If Russ was seeking to build an 800whp terror, yes, an LT platform wouldn't be the wisest platform to start with. But given all he wants is ~ 300hp and dead-stupid-easy to work with fuel injection/ecu platform, it's perhaps the best one to go with. I mean, if he comes across a similar priced 4.8/5.3 then maybe...but honestly, I think he'll be getting a much better deal this way.

(though seriously russ, still keep an eye out for a wrecked truck to buy for parts....)

I actually sold a complete 4.8 with ecu and harness to a member here months ago, thought I was done with cars for a while. The 4.8 loves boost but yah the lt1 is a 4 hr install and just need to shorten drive shaft 3" for the new auto. Gonna go look at donor Friday!

Got a Roadmaster with bad waterpump for $550, its a mandatory lt1 maint part anyway so Im happy. Nice careful harness removal and will probably swap the dash as well (no speedo cable on 4l trans, electronic drive).

It's all yours, I was only going to use it as a housing for an EWP this year. I'm in Stallis, PM me if you want it and I'll get it out of the garage for you.
