Ended up purchasing a cam from Howards and today I just got done breaking it in, Used there break in procedures and oil additive. So far she sound and responds Much better then what was in there.

Now its time to use Quality Oil, Howards recommends Brad Penn

I would like to run 20w 50

So what do you guys use ?

Brad Penn oils should be just fine. For the most part I just ran engine oil for diesel engines...since many diesel engines still use flat-tappets/etc. But even those have cut the zddp levels quite a bit as of recent...

There is certainly controversy regarding ZDDP levels and pretty much any oil you can buy now that advertises high zppd; VR1 would be one example that advertises suitability w/ older engines but has the SM or SN rating, so has to have lower zinc. If you feel like looking around for alternatives, find an oil w/ SH or SJ rating...many even say SL rated oils are good enough for flat-tappet cammed cars....they're out there, but not terribly common.

But even brad penn oils has been accused of not having the amount of ZDDP that they've advertised.

But the brad penn should still get you what you need as it should still have quite a bit more than most new SN rated oils. Nice thing is you're not running a killer, dual springs, extra aggressive lobed cam. Also know that you can get zddp additive at most speed shops, so you can use that approach too w/ pretty much any oil...just know you can add too much, so if you're adding it to regular SN rated oil, stick to half a bottle of zddp, for engine oil for diesel engines, then 1/4 of a bottle.

I use Brad Penn 20w-50 in my flat tapped solid lifter cam motor. Dual springs and a very high lift cam.
Kilpatrick Engines and Transmissions sells it for I believe $6.50/qt (not positive on the price but I know it's close)
I used their (Brad Penn) straight 30w break in oil for breaking in my cam. I've got 6000 miles on the motor now. The cam didn't even show polishing on the lobes when I put the new heads on recently.

I use WIX oil filters.
Did a little research some time ago. I believe it was Bob the Oil Guy who recommended them. (He does a lot of articles on oil and it's properties)
