View Full Version : Plastidipped the Vette

Overall a pretty simple process.
Some lessons learned for next time:
Need to blow water out of mirrors. Even 48hrs after a wash I had water leak out of the damn mirrors and bubble the dip.
Don’t worry about texture. Looking at the dipyourcar.com forums it seems everyone is paranoid about texture. Wasn’t a problem for me and I wasn’t being very careful.
Take your time when peeling the emblems. I hit a snag or two there.
It does not fill in rock chips or hide many flaws unfortunately.

Anything but flat black and I think it would look better. I think have a gloss spray you can put on it.

I was tired of silver and the paint was peeling off the bumper. This was cheap and easy.

Yeah they have a glossifier. Honestly I'm a fan of the white plastidip with the glossifier. I don't even like white cars but it looks the best out of all the colors I think.

Did you use cans or a paint spray gun? If you have any streaks or uneven layering, try using a spray gun. I am curious to see how the gunmetal or anthracite color would look on a car.

I actuall picked up a case of 6 cans of gunmetal to do the chrome clad
Wheels on my 300. The finish is kinda starting to peel so I figured there is no better time than the present to try it. I can't hurt. I've seen pictures on the Chrysler chrome clads and it actually makes a bluish tint but settles over time. I've just been eliminating some of the chrome accents for shits & giggles and for personal amusement.

I've used the black on the grill of the 300 along with the grills that are on the bottom of the bumper placed next to the fog lights. I also coated the door handles. I did it in later winter and a lot of car washes later it's held up rather well.

For the record. I like the look of it on your vet. It's different. Plus if you end up hating it just peel it off.

oh well. Some will it like others wont, who gives a shit as long as you do. I hated chrome on my truck so I removed it and coated what I couldnt remove(chrome grill/bumpers/mirrors/side emblems/rims/front logo). I love the way mine came out. It went all winter with just a few knicks in the grill but considering how I drive and the amount of miles we put on, it still looks awesome IMO.

How does this look when bugs hit it? And like oily shit flung up from the road? Part of me is really wanting to do this to my truck. It's got the junkyard camo think going on now and I'm not fond of that. If I could find a place to tear it apart for a few weeks I would love to do this.

Looks like any other bug splatter, clean it up, and sometimes it does leave the residue of the bug, but for the most part cleans right up. We did my buddies Jetta grill, its held up since March, and if a rock hit a spot of it and it was bad enough, we tore off that strip, taped it off quick, re-sprayed just that part, and looked good as new.

Like blackmage said and I can vouch that doing touch up is simple. If fills in the area and flows over the edges onto the older plasti and just blends itself in. I've had to do it once since I did the grill on my 300 this past winter. Tons of car washes and thousands of miles later and it still looks great.

Yeah, walmart has it in case you don't want to wait for it in the mail.

I didn't care for how the glossifier turned out. Maybe I just suck ass at spraying, but it came out looking like major orange peel and overall just shitty whereas the straight up black PD looked fine. I've heard you can spray regular paint over plastidip, maybe normal clearcoat paint would work better? I'd like to see someone good with spray cans paint with the glossifier though, maybe my opinion would be changed?

pnad
08-26-2013, 09:50 PM
If you spray real paint over dip it will make the dip crunchy and very hard to peel. If you have the means to use real paint just do that and skip the dip.
