I am looking at getting an 04 GTO to replace my charger r/t. I've always wanted one so why not. Is there anything I should look for? Are parts available for them? I'm looking at a clean 04 red 6 speed with 91,000 miles. What is a fair price? Thanks for any help in advance!

I would get a 05 (6.0 instead of 5.7)

modding is not cheap. But maybe prices have dropped.
No real aftermarket that's surviving, can't run all that wide of a tire.

04 has smaller brakes, different transmission ratios in the manuals, no factory split duals, flat hood, smaller engine.

That being said, they're getting damn cheap, and if I were in the market for a 2nd car (barely drive the one I have as it is) I'd consider getting one again for a DD.

Prices in my area are as low as 9k (for a 2004) to about 16k (for a 2006). I would assume Milwaukee is similar.

Good car, honestly, just plain looking.

I still do miss my old one.

So are the wearable parts for this car easy enough to get? I don't want to buy this car and have it break and then sit because parts aren't available. I am basically only looking for the 04 with the ls1. I haven't heard much great about the ls2. The guy is looking for $10000 for the car. I was going to offer $9500 of its as clean as he says.

GM car, so they gotta be. Just it's always got to be shipped from Australia. At least that was my experience. Not a huge deal, just something notable.

I wouldn't pay 9500 for an 04 w/ 90k+ but that's just me. If your in the market deals can be had. I would definitely look for an 05/06.

I'm having trouble finding anything decent in that price range around here. If you know of any let me know. From what I saw that seems to be what they are going for? I might be wrong, I am new to these.

$10K doesnt seem unreasonable to me, I sold my 04 2 years ago with 54,000 miles for $15k. They are nice cars, fun to drive, really comfortable interior. As far as wearable parts go, I never had any issue getting anything for mine. I only replaced a few tie rod ends, reverse switch in trans,d/s power window regulator and both rear wheel bearings in the 5 years I owned it.

As said, get the 05+.. Better brakes, stronger rear end, and bigger engine. 06's had nicer looking taillights, a lock button, and lit wheel controls as well.

Rear upper seat seams tend to split, so if you find that don't assume neglect.

The major GTO concern seems to be that PCM and BCMs are dying, and there are no replacement available. Not that theyre dying all over the place and weekly, but keep it in mind.

Strut bushings tend to collapse, look for a gap between the disk on the top of the strut mount and the fender well (replace with whiteline bushing).

Parts are available for the most part, but not cheap. I will say I miss the ever living hell out of my 06.

As for price, clean cars seem to be going for about 7K on up in auto, and 9K on up in manual (and this as a base is for high mileage cars).

Thanks for all the tips and advice. If anybody knows a good deal on a purple, black, impulse blue, or red car let me know. Otherwise it's looking like I'll end up with a torrid red 04 so far.

there is uasually more than one reason they quit making a model, oil consumption being one. if you must get a gm why not a camaro or a vette

The ls1 motors consume oil? I have had many camaros over the years and am tired of them, and am not a fan of corvettes. I thought about a mustang but the only ones I like are the 99-04 cobras or machs. I cannot afford a cobra, and the Mach is a possibility but the interior is nicer in the gto. I'm not looking for a race car or anything, just something I can enjoy upgrading a little and daily driving in the summer.

How would an LS1 vette or camaro have different oil consumption than a GTO? Also, they made the monaro for several years before and after they badged it a GTO... just didn't bring it here due to safety regs that it didn't pass.

You demonstrate otherwise on here regularly.

That being said, the correlation b/w sex change and GTO ownership is known (causes, sure, are more difficult to tease out...). We did have another sex change member here...and I think it was a camaro owner? Not even the LS type though either iirc....

way more than two.

I think it's only been 2 at a time however, you weren't going through your transformation (that I know of) when the other 2 were on this site.

Now it's just you, the other 2 haven't been on in years. Kind of a rough crowd!

The way I understood it is that some of these tranny swaps weren't completely switch swaps. Like having a clutchless manual to begin with but swapping to a full clutch manual over an automatic just because most of those parts were already there. Could be wrong though....

Either a bunch of gto owners think their shit is gold, or I'm just to picky. Condition of the cars were stated clean and they were scratched up and dented, basically neglected. I got sick of it and bought a Grand Prix gtp for my new dd. they look the same anyway right??? :p

You went from rwd v8 car to fwd car. Lol You change your mind as bad as I do. I test drove a 6.0 Gto once. Two minutes later I dropped it back off. Was not a fan.

Yeah I am terrible. It seems a bunch of us on this site have car attention deficit disorder. After a two and a half hour drive for a fairly priced 04 that was "clean" I test drove it and noticed it just felt improperly maintained. Ok I can deal with a little maintenance. The body was in "fair" shape, not clean. Interior was decent but both speaker grills were broken, front and rear seats had stitching coming undone, e brake was not functional, jack for spare was missing, and the bumper was coming apart where it met the fender.

The reason for the move to the fwd was just to find a cheap car. I am going to focus more on my hayabusa instead of having a car like the gto to drive to and from work.

Wagonbacker9
06-16-2013, 08:14 PM
the bumper sagging means its been off, its nearly impossible to remove without breaking the tab, so passing was probably a good call, unless it was just off to install/remove SAP grills.
