on topic we use a side box smoker from 10 years ago we bought from ACE hardware.... really depends on what you want to smoke.... and how much you are willing to tune it yourself.... we tend to use two roasting pans in the bottom filled with cider to help balance the heat load. You can get something 'decent' in the $200-400 range
