How do you prevent tools from rusting? I know oil is an option, but its messy.

What do you have that is rusty? The only time I have rust problems is when I forget something in a puddle or something stupid like that. Haha.

Muriatic acid will clean rust off of existing tools.

Clean and wipe with oily rag when you're done.

Boeshield kicks ass. You can get a can at Sears (http://www.sears.com/search=boeshield%20t-9).
It's a bit expensive but nothing beats it for long lasting rust protection.

Maybe try using them? While funny, I have the same issue but I use my tools almost everyday. In my case it happens from when the weather changes and the garage floor pulls moisture and my impact sockets and other tools develop rust. I use a little PB Blaster sprayed on a rag and wipe down all of the tools that can rust. It's far less messy than oil.

Boeshield T9 works great. I use it for my bicycle chains and components. You can use it on motorcycle chains as well. It's designed for extreme temp in both directions. It also rejects water.

Most bicycle shops carry it. It is fairly expensive

Tri Flow is another one that works great. It's less expensive.

Good idea. Thanks. I have my main 42" box in my personal garage and it says fairly rust free. My seccond 31" box at my part time job is in a janitor room with water heater, slop sink, etc and I think the moisture is too high. The seccond box is going to hell and almost every tool in it has rust. They are cheap tools though. I've haven't noticed name brand tools rusting (much).

My tools are used in and around salt and calcium chloride six months a year and they regularly get covered in salt and or calcium chloride. Cleaning procedure is to douche them with either water or brake cleaner; then douche with whatever penetrating oil, spray silicone, chain lube or whatever is closest. No issues.

In and around salt...impossible. Might be able to slow the progress thats about it.

It's not just cheaper tools that can rust, even my Matco swivel sockets and 3/8 deep impact ones do as well. They get used almost everyday. Far as PB Blaster I even use it to clean my tool box. Spray it on a rag then wipe the box down. Let is set for 5 mins then wipe the excess off. Makes the box look good again.
