I need something easy to use that could help keep my dad from fucking up his laptop every 4 months..lol The guy likes to surf and play games but pays no attention to the crap that is constantly getting installed and overtaking his laptop. I dont care if you have to pay for the service, but what is a good self updating software that can help minimize how much damage this old guy can do.:goof

Does he install applications a lot? If not, change his user account to a limited or standard account. Make sure you create an administrator account before you do this. This way, the malware won't be able to install itself because the user account won't have the appropriate permissions.

For AV, I like ESET products. http://www.eset.com/us/

Thank you Ben! I never thought of it since I use the same account when I have to constantly fix it, might as well change his permissions. Maybe this will finally cut back on the once a week calls to talk him through fixing what he just got done messing up..lol

No problem. Just remember to flip over to the admin account when your trying to install legitimate software or updates to said software.

It tried that with my Dad and turned out to be a pain with all the updates, windows, Java, adobe etc need... I would suggest getting him a MAC next time around and in the meantime AVG free download has kept him under control....For now anyway.
