I have a 1998 Plymouth Voyager with 198,000 miles. recently replaced the timing belt. engine runs good but check engine light and air bag light is on..one tire needs to be replaced (bald, cords showing), windshield cracked on passenger side, muffler rattles, rust holes in rocker panels. basically your typical "beater with a heater".
question is, should I bother selling it and dealing with the million questions and concerns from people who refuse to accept what a "beater" is or just junk it? Who buys cars like this and what could I expect to get for it?

thanks for your input

You should get about $500 with no troubles. Youll have to deal with some guys who want to spend $1 on a brand new car but someone will buy it

carmax will buy it without some guy knowing where you live and coming after you for problems he has down the road.

If you have time to deal with someone who buys a $500 car, sell it.

I've had the best luck selling cheap cars. You just put it on CL, be honest, and then be willing to just hang up/walk away from idiots. Most of the time I've sold cheap cars, it goes like this;

A. You drove it, do you want it or not
B. Well I'll give you ($500 less than you want)
A. No, its a cheap car, it works, you get what you pay for. I'll come down $100
B. Ummm, hmmmm, ummm,hmmm. OK.

Otherwise most places will give you around 350-500 for a scrap car WITH title and preferably keys. I've done it no title no keys before as well for around $300

I have sold a number of cars private with over 150,000. Biggest concerns were "does the 4wd work", does the heat work, and do I get the radio......you price it right and it will eliminate the questions.

The other thing you'll get on CL is some idiots that drive for an hour to...

1. Offer you a Personal Check. (Don't take one!!!)
2. Offer you half of what you're asking.
3. Bring their 16 year old daughter... Of who complains about the rust the entire time.

LOL That's what I got when we sold my sister in law's '96 Altima.

thanks for the input. I listed it on Craigslist for $800/offer/trades and instantly got emails "$200 cash right now, call me!"....."does it have a cd player and subs?"...."would you trade for my dog?". I can see this is going to be fun.

I actually think I know who the guy that said "$200 cash right now" is. He's a scrapper and he just surfs CL and e-mails pretty much everyone with a car fs under 1k.

I'd be in it for $300. That's my beater budget.

Its fun selling cheap cars. I've gotten offered food stamps in trade. They are always late too. My last REAL beater I sold on here for $200 just so I didn't have to deal with it.

Scrap prices are down a lot right now so you would probably only get $350 for it. If you junk it cut the cat off you can get $40-60 easy just for th cat.

I got $45 recently for a pair of alloy heads and a pair of cast brake drums. So if you're willing to do some teardown, you can get substantially more than the 'base' scrap price.

Yeah aluminum isn't bad right now but steel scrap prices have been down for quite some time. Good steel prices would range from $275 per ton and I think it's below $200 last time I checked.
