View Full Version : Homebuilt Twins!

Well, I decided to take the car in a new direction this year. I wanted something a lot more streetable, milder motor and pump gas friendly, but still be capable of an 8 second pass if I wanted to run race gas. So what we came up with is a 370" SBF with twin 60mm Borg Warner Turbos, air/air intercooler, powerglide, and of course a carb. All of it was built by me and my friends, which I can't thank enough.

The turbo kit consists of flipped JBA shorty stainless headers that were laying around the shop, 2.5" piping to the turbos, 3.5" downpipes, 3" cold side to the intercooler, and 3.5" from the cooler to the motor. The engine bay got a little love too with new fender aprons and frame rails forward of the front plate so we could put the radiator back in the stock location. It also got a new coat of paint, too.

So far it is a blast on 15psi! It might see a dyno in the future, it might not. One thing is for sure, it will get beaten on the street and driven like crazy!

Awesome!

How is the exhaust routed after it goes into the fenders?

Thanks guys! The exhaust just exits out in front of the front tire, reson being less tubing and fab work that way, lol. It isn't that loud at all, and it doesn't smell half as bad inside the car as the old setup did with the dump to the rear axle. Doesn't get as hot inside either.

You must have never seen the old setup. ;)

Two thumbs up lol. Love the exhaust in particular, it screams street car lol!

Thanks! It isn't the most ideal exhaust for a street car, but it is pretty quiet for what it is. I was going for simplicity, and the exhaust side doesn't get much better than what I got in that department.

Are you planning on coming through the fender (flush...no bullhorns) or is it going stay this way?

It's going to stay that way, don't really want them shooting out the side. It doesn't fill the car with exhaust, and it's plenty quiet to drive so it's fine by me. Drove it a lot without issue the last couple weeks.

I love the new setup! At the end of the day it is likely nearly as fast as the old one, but has way more response and far better street manners. Twin 60s is still a lot of horsepower potential!

Why not use a carb?

FourEyedFord
08-03-2012, 12:42 PM
Thanks guys! The twins are WAY more responsive than the single! I wanted something that had usable power, so that worked out perfect. The twin 60s are plenty capable of 8 second passes if I choose to put good gas back in it, too. I had the choice of upgrading these to 67s for $100 a piece, but declined because they would have flowed more than the 88mm did....that would have kind of counteracted the whole turning the car down idea, lol.

As for the carb, somebody told they work well!

As for the exhaust, I love it lol. Its probably just as quiet as anything exiting the fender (which really isnt that much more pipe to quiet it down), maybe quieter because its contained under the hood and pointed down, not out the side of the car directly at neighboring lanes of traffic! Its also super simple which is a bonus when it was made or when it needs to be worked on, didn't require bodywork, and is HIDDEN from outside view unlike a pipe hanging out the fender lol.

Heck when it comes down to it my Viper probably only has a couple feet more pipe in my side exit system behind the door...

Yep! I didn't really want it pointing at traffic, and doing it this way sure made things simple and hidden! Not to mention it doesn't get as hot in the car, and the car can sit lower without any ground clearance issues. I think people will be surprised.

Having not heard it I probably shouldn't comment, I just can't imagine how a couple feet of pipe dumped off the turbo is anything but deafening. Either way, looks freckin bad ass, so I guess it doesn't matter anyway!
