Hey all,

I am considering a trade of cars with a guy in Illinois. It would be a straight trade, there will be no $$ exchanged.

Will I be responsible for any sales tax? Is there anything out of the ordinary I would have to do?

Thanks- Garrett

Have an agreement with the other guy your cars are being sold for $1. If the DMV gets pissy you can tell them the truth and they will go away. Just be sure the other guy understands the agreement.

Trades are not taxed. I traded my blazer off for the K2500, and for price on the title, wrote "TRADE". Wasn't questioned on it.

The DMV hassled the shit out of me for a trade I did. Both cars had been and were re-titled in WI. They wanted to value the cars and tax the difference. That was the last time I put 'trade' on the title.

Nothing was said at the counter. I recieved a letter in the mail from Madision.

Write a dollar. Done it before with no questions.

Either do a dollar or write trade......By law, they cant tax your trade. If the agred apon value is the same as the car you are getting, no tax

When I traded for a vehicle, told them it was a straight up trade and was not taxed...

Great, thanks guys for all the replies. Now the only question is do I want to trade my Evo for a stage 3 Audi s4?

Sounds like a personal preference decision to me. I wouldn't be excited about daily driving either (DD I guess I'd prefer the S4 just because I'd imagine it'd be more comfy). So what kind of toy do you prefer? lol

Did you actually trade 2 like vehicles? if they were a decade apart and very difficult to justify being the 'same' value, I can see you getting questioned. Mine was a 1994 blazer for a 1994 truck, so not much to question there.

10 years was the exact difference in age. The car I got was newer and worth much more than the vehicle I traded away. However, the car I got on trade needed a LOT of work.

My clairvoyance is growing. I like it.

But yeah, I can seem them questioning that then. If they came after you a stack of receipts for parts or pictures of before/after bodywork etc should clear you of any potential issues.

Speaking of trading things. Have you guys caught that show Barter Kings? It's crazy how these guys trade up from a $100 item all the way up to items worth $8000+. Something I wouldn't mind learning how to be good at.

Btw what's wrong with DD a Evo or a S4? If they don't have some crazy triple disc clutch, then their ok. Actually my Supra with a twin disc wasn't that bad at all.

I would keep the Evo honestly. I have heard the Audis are nightmares...not reliable cars

I've had my share of cars that are considered unreliable :) This car has had most of the trouble areas taken care of and only 75k on it. Although an evo might require less maintenance, you just end up blowing that money anyway on mods.

Doesn't someone on here have a quick s4? Any owners/former owners on here?

Check with Neal (CannotPost). He is an Audi guy. So is Ramon, but I don't know what his screenname is on here.
