I need some help to solve my whinning rear end problem. About 3 years ago I had tom,bad ls1, change the stock gears in my ws.6 from 3:23 to 3:73. We tried 2 times to fix the whine ,but never did. I can not stand the whine anymore that I have been living with. I would like to get a set of 3:73 gears that do not whine ,or I will go back to stock. Any help on where to go? I do not know if Tom even does this anymore. Thank you Rick

What gears did you use? Tom put 3.73 motives in mine couple years ago and they have been perfect. No whine at all. Pretty sure he still does gears, he does everything else so I would PM him.

So your saying it made noise from day one of installing the new gears? Did he set the pinion to ring gear up right? Usually its the bearings or the pinion to ring gear isn't set right that causes a whining noise.

The gears made a whine right away. went back the next week and tried to reset up again, but no luck. Stock gears made no sound at all. Rick

I have 3:73's and mosers in my 66, whined like hell when I got it...found out it was 1/3-1/2 qt low on fluid and the fluid was old. Changed it out with Royal purple and never made noise again.

My rx7 whined under power and decel in gear, it was the pinion bearing.

well it sounds like the lash is off.. Unfortunatly the gears a now worn that way...Its a crap shoot with gears ..Some come from motive real nice ...some are not so nice and Whine no matter what..Even with a pinion depth tool ect. its still a gamble

What if your stock gears whine too ;)

They should not whine if the person installing them knows what they are doing. They where installed without any whine from the factory,so the gears would not be the problem,it would be the installation.

No offense but I'm pretty sure Tom knows what he's doing. Don't blame Tom when you didn't do your research and bought gears that are known for being noisy.

I admit I didn't know then what I know now, so there is a strong chance it's off. However this was like back in 2006 or something a long time ago too, i also think i returned or offered to return the $$ for the troubles at the time too. Good news is it sounds like the problem is being rectified so I'll be stepping back out of this thread.

I NEVER SAID IT WAS TOMS FAULT!!!!!! I Stated that when the STOCK gears go back in they should not make a noise. I got a bad set of motive gears and Tom tried with what he had to work with. Do not make statements about things I did not say in this thread. Tom Is great to work with!!!!! Rick
