Looking to pick up a new mountain bike here in the next month or so. I am replacing my 14 year old Gary Fisher Wahoo, that being said, I guess I want front shocked fork possibly with lock out, mechanical disc brake, and good quality. Probably under $700. I was looking at the new wahoo, but not really sold on the whole 29'er thing yet. I do like running at the alpha trail by the ski hill and I hear the 29'er doesn't far so well., What are all the opinions out there? Also what other brands are good?

I have this one and like it alot. It's not loaded but it had disc brakes like I wanted and it was in my price range. I've used it for a couple years not and have no complaints. I take it on the Alpha trail also and it does fine.

We should hit up some trails sometime.

I have a 3700 with that same paint. IDK how much better the components are on the 3900 vs the 3700, but I'm not overly impressed with it. The rear derailleur only seems to shift if you shift two or more gears at a time. I think the freewheel is skipping; if I lay a lot of power into it in a higher gear going up a hill slow it feels like the freewheel skips or the chain skips. The chain tension seems good and the gears look good. I took it for the first ride of the year Sunday and when I pulled it out of the rafters I noticed the rear wheel wobbles a shit ton, so I have to pull it and see what's up. May be as simple as a cleaning and repacking of the wheel bearings. Bike has 750 miles on it tops, 99% on paved ground; I think I shouldn't be having issues with it, but maybe I'm wrong.

I'm a road biker so I'm not up on the MTB gearsets available. But I will say don't cheap out on the gearing.
You could have the best frame available but if you throw cheap gears on it you will think it's the worst piece of junk.
There really is a big difference in gear technology. Better components mean more reliability, smoother shifting and less maintenance plus down time.

I believe Shimano XT is a possible decent starting point.
SRAM is Ferrari in road bike components. They got their start in MTB so I'm sure you can't go wrong with their stuff.

I am 5'7" and my bike right now just says medium. I think it is a 17.5

We should get a group ride going some time too. That would be fun!

And I will have to think about the 5200. Thanks for the offer.

Hey Pork, is it a road bike or a mtb?
When I looked it up it came across as a road bike.

+1?
All I have is Trek road bikes. 5500 Carbon. Campy Centaur on mine. Shimano Dura Ace on my wife's. I've not had any problems with them or the past bikes I've owned that were Trek.

over-priced and over hyped just because "some" of them are made in WI

Ahh, okay.

I bought my frames used so I didn't pay as much. I groupo and build my own bikes.
I will say though that Trek does stand behind their frames. A previous bike, I cracked the carbon frame in an accident and they replaced it under the lifetime warranty. They sent a rep out. He looked at it and said "Yep, it's broke" and they sent me a new frame. (It was also a 5500 frame)
