Tossing the idea of upgrading heads already, current heads are tinny little guys, even the stock 400 heads were bigger then what I have... current are 1.7 intake and 1.3 exhaust :durr

I'm looking for something in the 2.02 1.60 area with 62-64 cc

Just let me know..

Ugh.... I went through the same thing with my s-10. I swapped to vortec heads and a bigger cam, rpm intake..Made a huge improvement! Dropped a full second and picked up 9mph

I'm not familiar with vortex, those are newer heads right ? Intake pattern is different ?

vortech heads were mostly used on late 90s 5.7 truck stuff. They do work well, however as you already hinted they do require some machining to use old style intake manifold,or a different intake all together.
I believe you have a t-ram for old style heads now, which leads me to believe those Dart heads would be the best decision for your application. Hard to justify doing all the machine work and hardparts to old stock castings when the savings would be minimal in the end.

I agree with Ron. Vortec heads aren't worth it unless you score a really good deal like I did. I got the heads for $350 and the intake and cam for $100.

The point I was trying to make is that your heads are restricting you a lot, like mine were until I changed them out. With a great set of heads, you could get better results than I did.

Dart heads and call it a day. Unless you can score a really nice set of 2.02 GM heads cheap

problem with MOST of the old GM stuff is it is long worn out and you will stick nearly the same money in them to make them right again(if they are not already cracked)

Good info !!!

I do have a lead on a set of edelbrock performer RPM 6071 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust with 70cc chamber, they were just gone through and have Crane Came 1.6 rockers, rockers are brand new. There from my buddys S-10 build, never fired ! I can get them for $500 for everything, even includes ARP bolts if I want them...

I would have to have steam holes drilled, I'd guess $80 to $150 to have a shop drill them....

I don't know if those chambers would be to much for my Motor, its a 9.75:1 compression...

Juicedimpss I'm going to do some reading on those heads, I just read your PM !

I'm running iron Vortec heads on my 383.
With the cost of the heads I have about $850 invested in getting them ported, polished and all Comp Cams 2.02/1.60 SS valves and springs and screw in studs.
I also had to have the seats recessed for my .550 lift cam.
I got mine from B&M Auto Salvage for $68 each. I did have them magnafluxed because they are prone to cracks. (had to exchange one head due to crack at valve seat into the water jacket.

If I had to do it over again I would go with aluminum AFR or Dart heads. I had some cooling issues early on and wanted to stick with iron heads to alleviate cracking if I overheated. (I've since resolved that problem)
