I am really considering buying this TECH2 hood to solve my clearance issue with the FAST 102mm intake.

This hood was originally designed to fit the 2JZ motor under the hood.

Stock hood touches where the blue tape is and without the intake tube the hood will rest on the "LSXr" lettering on top the intake.
https://lh5.googleusercontent.com/-ZEQRiIRVfC4/Tj7XY3orFgI/AAAAAAAAB4Q/ArcIx-kXg94/s800/IMG_1104.JPG

Judging from this pic I would say the 2JZ motor is higher and further forward.

I would agree...if that hood clears that timing cover on the 2jz you should have no problems.

Fuck Tech2. Hood looks neat but that company sucks.

what engine mounts are you using? There are shorter ones available for the C5/GTO to accomodate blowers/FAST, looks like they are listed as the same as hinson's application in the FD as well.

http://hinsonsupercars.com/p-1351-hms-urethane-engine-mounts-shorter-version-c5c6gtorx7.aspx

Not as pretty as your hood option, but substantially cheaper, and if they don't fix the clearance issue, I'll buy em, I've been meaning to.

The hood looks great from the front, but the bulge is unnatural from the side.

Flick,
What is your experience with TECH2? I don't have a ton of options.

Like modifying my existing hood like this guy did... I'm not overly enthusiastic about it. It's difficult/time consuming to do and looks like the car has a stiffy in its pants.

I like the gills. I almost forgot there is another cheaper option. There's a guy making a cowl hood in 2 versions. A pin-on version for $375 (CHEAP!) where the cowl goes all the way to the windshield and a regular hood latch version for $500

Nobody has posted good finished pics yet. In my opinion this hood option is very musclecar-esque, but I'm not convinced it follows the body lines very well.

These pics are absolute crap.

ultimately I think your first choice looks best...

The aesthetics fit with the first one...the RX having smooth bulbous shapes keeping a hood with smooth rounded transitions vs going with the sharper and straighter lines of the cowl. The hood bulge is a non-starter...especially in that orange in the car above...looks like what you'd see of a not quite finished tranny working at hooters.

Andy - Liz bought her 2JZ Swap kit from Tech2. The swap kit was built fine, but far too expensive for what it was. They cut the crossmember in 1 spot, and weld a flat piece of metal. Honestly shouldn't take a fab shop any more then an hour or two, then it used Existing 2JZGTE mounts (Factory ones that come with the engine) I will say that is a decent product just not worth the money.

She used them to get the wiring done, Back when she had it done a guy by the name of Sean Palmquist was doing the wiring harness's for them in house. He left a few months later (7-8?) And we had a few questions for Tech2 about how the wiring was done and what plug is which, And the people pretty much said we don't have that information Sorry, if you want send us the harness and we can do it for you. The amount (or lack of) Customer service is horrible. Drew wasen't to bad he seemed to talk down quite a bit, And Carlo was pretty much an asshole. I can't remember the female that was working there however she was nice. I suppose their products aren't bad their customer service isn't very good.

Yeah, the penis hood is a definite no, I agree the cowl would look out of place, though you do have a V8 in an RX7, so maybe not THAT out of place.

I wish they made something that nice for my gto, mines giving me fits!

Yeah, ONLY hood I've seen for the GTO I liked was a one-off custom with a pin-on hood with a factory frame fitted under it. I don't even want to think about how much work it would take.

Although cheaper is always nice....the difference with how $1000 hoods fit and $400 hoods is very important. From my experience the more money you blow the more it really does just bolt right on.

So the guy with the orange hood re-attempted his hood mod with another hood with less clearance (it was overkill)

The new hood finally came in.Second time around is much better. Now I know what has to clear. Made the hump more subtle. Now it doesn't look like a pimple. Much lighter too, less filler.

Stock weight is 3125. I think I will be coming in around 2900 because I added a lot of sound deadening.

The stock cats are REALLY heavy and the rotary is cast iron. LSx is aluminum. Only the T-56 is marginally heavier than the rx-7 5-speed.

Prince Valiant
04-28-2012, 01:04 PM
Isn't much of the weight savings also from the new tubular k-member as well? But I do remember taking off the old exhaust and how large and heavy (and inefficient) that old cat was...

Perhaps you forgot I got this far...Oh yeah...SURE Andy...are we supposed to conclude that you mandrel bent you're exhaust by hand then used your eyes to laser weld it to your car???? :goof:

If it's something you'd like to try yourself, go for it...I can see from 50 miles away that it would be something I personally could never in a million years pull off, lol.

To be honest though, that guy's second effort IS much much better looking...but it still doesn't look as sharp as the first hood. Plus, I like the speed-fish-gills for helping to the amazing amount of heat that a 650+hp N/A v8 is capable of producing....

I've got my Dad to help me out of body work issues. I like to throw the challenge in front of him. I know we can work through it, but it is more time. Is the time worth a 1000 bucks, trying to make it perfect. I could also sell the stock hood to to help recoup some costs.
