How long does it take to get them?

I sent my title in with the check and pictures of the car and all of that. I'm waiting for the new title and new plates. It's been over a month and they haven't cashed the check or anything. Does it usually take this long?

Does this help? I think it takes awhile.

Yeah I looked at that but I figured they would at least have cashed my check already. I also looked it up by vin on their site and nothing has been done to the title since 04 back when I bought it. So I don't know if it's just chillin in an office or something right now or what lol.

I just figured I would ask and see how long it took other people's.

I have to order classic plates yet and my current plates expire at the end of next month. I guess they don't give you temp plates either while you wait. Boo. ):

Mark I would call and politely talk to somebody in the special plates department. If anything they should be able to give you a time frame.....

If you turn your application in in person at a DMV, they will give you a "paper plate" for a few bucks to get you by til your real plates come.

I wonder if the plate is ran if it will show up as a "classic" plate.

Does it matter?

Last time I went to the DMV, they told me I couldn't do that and had to renew my regular plates while I waited for personalized/classic plates.

Korndogg

Yeah you can't do it at the DMV. You have to send everything in to Madison.

I'll wait a little longer and then try to call and get some info. Thanks everyone!

Is it the same for Brewers plates, gotta mail in for personalized? And no temp.plates available?

pOrk

Temporary plates are always available, just gotta pay more. Saying temporary plates aren't available is like saying speeding isn't illegal

On the form for classic plates, it states that you cannot receive temporary plates while you wait for your classic plates.

I had a temporary plate on my Biscayne until my classic plates arrived. Took probably 3-4 weeks to get mine but thats been about 5 years now

Right now the DMV is backed up....For what ever reason this happens a lot this time of the year. you might have to wait 2 months. Call the DMV if you dont hear anything in the next few weeks.

You can buy a temporary plate, they do not supply you with one.

The rules must have changed in the past few years. I know for a fact temporary plates could be had while waiting for special plates.

I tried to purchase one and was told I could not. I was told I had to renew the registration of the plates while I waited.

This makes no sense to me unless I am completely missing something. The DMV wants you to pay for an entire year of registration in order to drive that vehicle for a few weeks?

michelle

Just going by what I was told. Even on the MV2323 form, it states "Temporary plates for January operation are available for $5 for five consecutive days or $30 for the month; use form MV2750. Temporary plates are not available while original applications are being processed."

Took 8 weeks last summer to get my plates, then I moved back to michigan but I never reregistered so they are still on the car. Now I will be moving back so I won't need to transfer anything.

You can do that, but you have to pay for them every year; you only buy collectors plates ones. Well, I suppose you could buy regular plates only once; but after a year, the man will hassle you to buy new ones.

Because the car has been under my dad's name since I was 18. Kept it that way to save on insurance and when I moved out when I was 21 I just kept it on there to keep saving on insurance and it has also been stored there the past 8 years until recently when I bought my house. It has classic plates on it, I'm just transferring it over now.

Got a call today. No go on the Collector plates. Going hobbiest I guess. I didn't realize they got so strict. The specific problems she mentioned were my "aftermarket air cleaner, and multiple gauges that are not stock."

I have a tacometer and a fuel pressure gauge..............really? lol

So now I have to send ANOTHER form to them for the hobbiest plate instead of them just cashing my damn check and mailing the plates for me.

What did you expect? Collector plates are for stock vehicles, hobbiest plates are for modified vehicles. It's in plain English in the DMV literature.

Korndogg
04-17-2012, 08:00 PM
All I'm saying is they got more strict than they used to be. Either that or I got someone that didn't give a flying fuck last time.

Car Guy
04-17-2012, 10:11 PM
I agree with pOrk but the DMV has become much stricter over the past few years. However it is still hit or miss. I still see collector plates approved for heavily modified vehicles and then the dumbest things throw a red flag. Regardless of the rules I think collector plates look horrible on 80-90% of vehicles they go on. Hobbyist plates will look very good on your Camaro Mark. You should be glad they said something. :thumbsup

JC70SS
04-18-2012, 08:10 AM
Part of the reason they are FBI like is because people were putting them on old shit-buckets that only a metal recycler would collect(aka hoopties). As many people know that is my pet peeve. Anytime I see a daily driver with collector plates if possible I ask the driver why they think it is a collector car LOL.

This^. If I can only get Hobbyist plates, they're goning to get painted or I'll get regular ones. How much does it cost for someone to repaint them? I got no painting skillz. :goof

I wish I could get hobbyist plates. There's no way my car would pass an inspection, much less the visual in pictures. How do the drag cars I see pass? Unless they were registered before the days of having to send in pics.

pOrk

Hobbiest plates are the easiest ones to get. No inspection just need a few pics

loud91rs
04-18-2012, 08:15 PM
pOrk, are you sure? It says on the website that it may require an inspection. If they pull me in for that, I am screwed.

"All vehicles, including "Street Modified" and
"Replicas" may be required to pass an inspection
before title and registration can be processed. A passed inspection does not guarantee that a title
or registration will be issued."

From what I can see the only cars that need inspection are homemade and reconstructed vehicles and that is for safety equipment. But for regular cars to get hobbiest or collector plates, all you need to do is send in pics.

Mailed in the paperwork for collector plates on the SHO and truck today. Guess we'll see how long it takes! The DMV said I would get the truck plates first and then the car plates would be 4-6 weeks after since they would have to get them custom stamped with the letter "A" after the number that's on the truck ones.

I don't understand why you were rejected lol. I have gotten stuff like my Challenger has collector plates on it with a tube chassis and tubs and slicks and tin interior lol. That was awhile ago though. But, I did get collector plates on my son and my 91 Talon about a year or so ago and that thing has plenty of gauges, front mount intercooler, mods that are pretty obvious in the pics.

I JUST the other day mailed in to get them on my 92 Galant VR4, I hope I don't get rejected it has a few gauges and a front mount as well. I will let you know.

Wow, I guess I am starting to get old... a '90 SHO, a '91 Talon and a '92 Galant all getting collectors plates?? Don't get me wrong, I know they are all very nice cars. Just never thought I'd see the day.. LOL

michelle

I know mine isn't necessarily a "collector" to the average person, but I just think logically. $75 a year to register versus a one-time $200 (well $150 for the second classic in my name). So if I keep the car for a few years, in the long run I am "saving" money. I pay enough in registration with trailer, cars, trucks, bike, etc. that not paying another $75 in the future makes me smile. (:

Moparjim
05-02-2012, 02:46 PM
92 galant vr4 were serial numbered and plaqued 1/1000. Rarer than all but the rarest musclecars. They made 2000 Plymouth Superbirds for comparison...

If I dont drive them in the winter, and they are nice performance cars and I plan on having them awhile I am with michelle I get collectors plates on them.

Update:

Just got the Galant VR4 collector plates and registration in the mail. No hassles, car has minor "visible" mods like gauges, FMIC, etc.

Not sure, maybe they dont hassle me because I have other collector plates already.
