Just bought a 96 Ram 1500 4x4 with the 5.9, if it matters it's an extended cab short box (unsure if that changes any dimensions). Whats happening right now is torque converter isn't locking up/very sluggish off the line, it is slightly low on fluid, haven't done any diagnosis on it just want to be prepared. So needless to say the already bad fuel economy is worse. Also if anyone happens to know for sure what these symptoms would indicate on a Dodge the info would be appreciated.

Anyone have a good trans laying around or know someone that does? Cheaper the better it's just an A to B truck that may haul a car once in a great while, would be used for hunting as well, not looking for rebuilt unless money is right.

Try changing the fluid and make sure to use ATF+4 sourced from the dealer (many of the parts store or quick lube places are not sufficient, as it's usually dexron w/ an additives, but the base oil is what is actually incompatible). Not sure if you'd need the trans reprograming/reflash would help after a period of slipping/bad running, though I believe it's recommended for their FWD trans...but contact plum crazy on here as he is a dodge tech and could more directly answer your question.

Will do, just thought I would cover my ass if it is bad, my initial thoughts are that it's okay but I'm not real familiar with dodge transmissions

96 is last year of 3 speed, your is probably a 4 speed, ID by gear indicator on dash.

Each of those has its own little oddities that can happen, change the filter because the trans wont whine like old ones as they
starve for oil, just get real soft feeling. As noted use the plus4 fluid, secret mojo in the stuff for Mopars loose tolerance slushbox's.

Has 1 2 and D on dash and overdrive button on dash (95% sure it's 1, 2, D anyways)

Came up with P1757 code (havent googled it yet so no clue what it is, scanner says manufacturer specific) and P0783 gear selection 3-4 shift malfunction, so bad solenoid? Fluid looks purple, guessing guy used royal purple, color seems good at that rate doesnt smell burnt and didnt look burnt. Was awfully curious why i was at 2800 rpm at 70mph

P1757 is "governor pressure above 3psi when request is 0 psi"

Just read that not long ago, the causes for that code are anywheres from bad trans to bad o2 sensor from my reading..know of any real common causes?

Just talked to a good friend of my dads at Aamco in Brookfield, he's thinking the trans is shot. So before i commit my tax return to my transmission anyone on here have a trans? 46RE I believe is the correct ID

If it's been in a while/many miles, you probably are SOL...non-correct fluid is the death of the mopar 4/5/6 speeds...

I'm guessing fluid is fairly fresh, isn't burnt or real dirty looking, but before that who knows. I just dont want to piss away like $60-$80 flushing the trans only to find out it's still bad. Checked car-part.com most are like $700-up and for that money I'll have the thing rebuilt and upgraded for $1200. Hoping the misfire issues are minor, cant afford to sink a shit ton into this thing, dont even want to do the trans, but its in good enough shape to do it.

should be a 47re trans. also sounds like from "sluggish take off" its stuck in limp mode. it causes it to take off is 2nd gear. p1757 would cause that.

Punch it in on advance's website comes up as a 46re, not that their site is always right, but it's all I have to go off of. The starting in 2nd gear makes sense, but still sits at 2800 rpm @ 70mph. Like I said think I'll pull trans and drop it off at Aamco in brookfield have my dads buddy rebuild it and just drive it till it rots away

47re refers to the trans used in 2500/3500 models behind the 8.0 v-10 and 5.9 I6, whereas the 46re refers to the lighter duty trans used behind most all 360's.

Basic jist of dodge trans is "4" is 4 forward gears, "6" or "7" refering to an internal/corporate designation for torque capacity (also "2" and "5") are used, "R" for rear wheel drive, and "E" for electronic control...so there are earlier ones that are 47rh, later ones that are 545rfe (5 forward gears, 4 gears normal upshift, 5 torque rating, rear wheel drive, fully electronic), 65rfe, 68rfe, 66rfe, etc....

Makes sense, so 46re and 47re would be the same trans then just different torque capacities

Makes sense, so 46re and 47re would be the same trans then just different torque capacitiesEssentially they are the same, both are 727 based auto trans with overdrive units attached to the back, though the 46re would be more similar to the A-999 (which itself was a hybrid 904/727 trans), while the 47re is a more pure conversion of the 727....

You wouldn't be able to simply upgrade or even simply swap one for another....since there are changes to input shaft, torque converter, output shaft, completely different planetary gear set, wider bands, etc, etc....and then changes were made to the case to accommodate the differences...
