View Full Version : Wisdom Teeth - Recommendations?

I think it's time I get my wisdom teeth out. My health insurance doesn't cover it and I don't have dental insurance, so it's a cash kind of thing.

Any recommendations of places to go? Or places to avoid?

Within or near Washington/Waukesha County would be nice.

PS - Does it hurt a lot? Do the drugs help? ):

Wisconsin health fund is open to the public. But in Milwaukee county. Pain depends on if they are impacted or not. And how much pain you can handle.

They didn't have an anesthesiologist at Fort Huachuca so I had mine removed awake. Also do not wait my two bottoms grew in sideways and made contact with the molars and had to be cut into pieces and then removed. Now this wouldn't be bad had I been knocked out....

I opted for gas and it was still the most traumatic thing ive ever went through. Pay the extra couple hundred and get knocked out.

I guess I got lucky...

I had mine removed at bootcamp, they were impacted so they had to shatter them or what ever they do.

I got 2 shots of Novocaine and that was it. In and out in about 15 minutes. Didn't hurt at all, it was just really weird to feel the pressure and hear them snap out of my mouth.

No swelling or anything, and I was eating solid food that night.

This is what happened to mine, and I need to have them removed asap but can't afford the almost 2400 dollar expense at the moment. As of May I will have health and dental again, hope it comes QUICK

Mine were all impacted and since I needed to be knocked out, I was told it qualified as surgery so my dental didnt get the bill but my medical insurance did. I had all 4 removed at once, there is no sense in prolonging the pain.

^ you mean impacted? Also I let mine go to the point where it formed a small cavity. Lemme tell ya getting the back of your tooth fixed is very unpleasant. Get that shit fixed ASAP if it's impacted trust me it SUCKS!!!!!!!!

I only have three wisdom teeth. One of my uppers never developed, I guess. One less to get removed, so I am not complaining!

I also verified with the dentist I last had x-rays with and they were impacted, so I will call our new health insurance company on Monday and see what they have to say about it. Thanks for the recommendation so far! Looks like I have a few phone calls to make on Monday.

WITH my insurance (both medical and dental combining) it was going to cost me almost 1000. i don't think you are going to like what you hear...

Yeah, so far, not cool. $1900 is one quote. Health insurance won't cover it. They only cover dental work in regards to fixing my teeth if damaged in an accident.

I have insurance and I ended up paying 1100 out of the 1200 bill. Ugh. It would've only been $280 bux if i wanted to be awake... but I didn't so it cost more. Money well spent to get to go away for a while during the procedure. :)

This won't help, but I had my wisdom teeth pulled out at the Dentist office on Port Rd just before Green Tree, by the PickNSave. The doctor at one point put his leg up on the chair to attempt to "yank" my wisdom tooth out (was impacted into the jaw bone). He got it out but in doing so ripped 2 large blood vessels, and simply closed the flesh OVER the bleeding vessels. I bled nearly a pint of blood from my mouth over the next 6 hours while leaving voicemails and triage calls at the office. By the 3rd phone call, we were told that the doctor took the afternoon off to golf...despite me leaving voicemails since almost 930am. By 8pm I had to be rushed to emergency dental surgery because I couldn't keep my blood sugar up and kept getting dreary. (I was givin NO medication at ALL).
Basically they had to re-do almost 50% of his work, or because the vessel was large enough it would almost never clot by itself. The second doctor was AMAZING, despite his less than desirable office location (92nd and silver spring). I never recieved a bill for any services, and the second doctor filed a formal Provider Complaint against the first doctor for lack of follow up care and negligence of professional responsibility. afaik the first doctor no longer practices in the area.

Don't mean to scare you, but it can happen.

I had mine done at a place in bayshore mall. All 4 at the same time, all 4 impacted, one was actually up so high it was touching my sinus cavity. I paid the extra $800 to get knocked out(well worth it). I would recomend the place, over all it went well.

Also make sure you listen to them and don't smoke or drink from a straw or anything like that, you don't want dry sockets, its bad.

A year after I had mine out, little pieces of tooth slowly surfaced through the gums. It was fun using a tweezers to pick them out.

^^ that helps.

I had all four of them impacted. It was the most painful event in my life. I didn't have a anesthesiologist because I was paying out of pocket. That was my first mistake. And during the removal the oral surgeon remarked "this f**ckin sucks". And this was a very professional surgeon, and one my family went to for years.

After the removal, he dumped out his samples and gave me everything he had for pain killers. I don't remember the car ride home and I woke up 2 days later with a headache and a mouth full of cotton to stop the bleeding. I ended up paying him when I could since I was between jobs. It was 2100 if I remember right. So your qoutes are on the mark.

I am in the same boat right now: my wisdom teeth need to come out.

As many of you know, my dad is a dentist. Unfortunately, his specialty is pediatrics. He is tempted to pull my wisdom teeth, but one of them requires a specialist.

"Most dentist's love cash!" It's a fact.

If you can negotiate and are willing to hunt around, you can get a %50 reduction in the price of the proceedure. For starters, any price given is a high point. When the dentists deal with insurance, they usually get between %60-70 when combined with the copay and other fees. Add taxes and other expenses and watch the profit margins fall considerable.

Just remember to work around the dentist's schedule. Figure out what part of the day/week/month/year is usually the least busy.

The price which is usually non-negotiable is being knocked out.

How do you shoP around? I tried that approach and get get a price without going in for an exam. At that point is it worth the hassle? I already paid for the exam once, and hate going to the dentist ao no way can I go have an exam and 5 different places
