CHICAGO (AP) -- Bears wide receiver Sam Hurd (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/players/8024) was in federal custody Thursday after authorities accused him of trying to set up a drug distribution network in the Chicago area and arrested him after he allegedly agreed to buy a kilogram of cocaine from an undercover agent.
According to the federal complaint, Hurd was arrested Wednesday night after meeting with the agent at a Chicago restaurant. The complaint contends Hurd told the agent that he was interested in buying five to 10 kilograms of cocaine and 1,000 pounds of marijuana per week to distribute.
Hurd told the agent "his co-conspirator is in charge of doing the majority of the deals" while he focused on "higher-end deals," the complaint said. He allegedly said he could pay for the kilogram of cocaine after "he gets out of practice," then walked out of the restaurant with the package and was arrested.
The complaint alleges that Hurd also told the agent that he and a co-conspirator already distribute about four kilos of cocaine a week in the Chicago area, but his supplier couldn't keep up with his demands.
He was scheduled to make his initial court appearance later Thursday. It wasn't immediately known whether he had an attorney and his agent, Ian Greengross, did not immediately return a message.
The Bears said the team is aware of Hurd's arrest and is gathering details about what happened.
"We are disappointed whenever these circumstances arise. We will deal with them appropriately once we have all the information," the team said in a statement.
Hurd, a 26-year-old native of San Antonio who played college ball at Northern Illinois, played for five seasons with the Dallas Cowboys (http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/football/nfl/teams/cowboys) and is now in his first season with the Bears. He has contributed mostly on special teams, playing in 77 games overall with six starts and two career touchdowns. He has played in 12 games this year, catching eight passes for 109 yards.
The complaint says an informant tipped off authorities in Texas in July, leading to an investigation in which an unidentified acquaintance of Hurd's "negotiated" for approximately five kilograms of cocaine on the player's behalf.
The Bears agreed to a three-year deal with Hurd that was announced on July 29 - the day after federal authorities say he had agreed to a "consensual interview" with Homeland Security investigators over $88,000 in cash that had been seized in a car he owned in the Dallas area.

Didn't know that one player was the "Chicago bears"... And to be honest I'm not surprised. I wouldn't doubt that there are lots of players on all different teams that are involved in shit like this...

That wasn't called for, your stepping into personal territory, beyond just posting in a forum. You don't even know me, or the bad area I grew up in, taking the road less traveled from most of the kids who grew up on N. Richards St. I've never associated or "seriously" advocated any drug use, some father I'd be, some Marine I'd be. Race has nothing to do with being a lowlife, and any lowlife that deals with drugs will never get my approval.

You really just bummed me out man, drug association accusations hit home, my cousin and his fiance who was pregnant were brutally murdered by Latin Kings in the winter of 2000 because they thought they had "drugs" in there south side Milwaukee apartment, right in front of her baby. And they were just living in the wrong place at the wrong time, and if you must know, he was white...

So I won't get upset, and you can call me a whiner all you want, but I just want you to know how ignorant you are because I never really had a problem with you. I'm no kidcougar, I've been around longer than most, so you people that don't really know me need to relax with all the nonsense. I'll be the first to say I've been wrong. But having an opinion and defending it is something I'd stand by.

Back the thread please, please keep me out your mouth unless I partake.

I love how pro athletes think they can be Big Meech or Frank Lucas since they have some capitol to start. The biggest drug dealers on the planet started with a few hundred in fronted blow and turned it into empires. They also seem to think it works like in the movies... Did he really think that some 3rd party he never met before (the agent) would just slide him a key across the table with a handshake and let him walk out?
Dude has his "associate" work out most of the deal (so his friend is an idiot to start); how long did it take that guy to tell 5 other dudes from the block that his boy was gonna start slinging weight...and then they told someone else....and on. If the feds wouldn't of got him, a gang would have. Especially if he's trying to step on toes down in Chicago....I mean there are only about 7-10 major gangs I can think of trying to run things down there. I'm sure that would have gone well. Getting arrested is about the safest thing that could have happened to him.
If he gets time, best of luck in a cell. I'm sure the other guys on the cell block will be glad to know what your contract signing was worth while they pimp his ass for Honey Cakes and Ramen.
