So let's say someone comes out and looks at an item you have listed. They agree to purchase it and put $100 down (agreed it would be non-refundable) with the rest of the cash and pick-up of the item occurring two days later.

No phone call and a no-show. During the original agreement, there was a mention of Sunday. No phone call or showing on Sunday.

How long does one wait before selling the item to the second interested party? Would you give the person a week? Or just sell it right away?

I'm not a fan of complete strangers being upset, so that's why I am asking. No need for retaliation over a tractor. Nothing is in writing in regards to the non-refundable deposit. Never had an issue before when it came to Craigslist.

I assume you can't contact them?

Keep it listed on craigslist. Sell it to someone else after sunday at noon. Offer maybe $50 back if they get pissy.

I bet they don't have a way to pick it up.

He came the first day with a truck/trailer, but not the full cash amount. Two voicemails have been left on our end.

When you say Sunday, are you referring to this past sunday?

If so, and you didn't hear from him, and you left messages, then you've done all you can. Time to sell it. If he contacted you to readjust your arrangements, then it would be a different story.

Unfortunatly, since you dont have anything written down stating that it is a non refundable down payment, the best thing that you could do would be sell the item to someone else, and refund the guy the money he gave you....I am sure you could find his address somehow.

I would refund nothing he is past the time he set up for pick up and he made no arrangement to make a new date so keep it

I would also tell the other intrested party to come get it

The buyer could be attempting to buy a different item now and using yours as a "back-up"... just a thought.

I dont generally give people money down on something that might be a back up if I am going to lose it.

i would sell to the next person...if first buyer comes back explain your attempts and remind them of your original deal. If they inquire about a refund of the deposit play it by ear.

i'd give a refund ONLY if you get as much or more than you would have gotten from the original buyer

If the guy gave me money I would call them and leave them a message saying they have 5 days to pick it up. If they do not pick it up it will be put back up for sale and the money would not be refunded.

If you stated it was a non refundable deposit and even now days past they haven't contacted you then it's time to move on to the next buyer. Sounds like you've done more then your part already.

Sell it. Don't feel guilty at all for selling it, but I would give him back his money so were right back at square one, no harm no foul, you made your sale regardless. No written agreement could ugly either way, but simply is the stress seriously worth $100? You probably spend more on food. Not saying you'd be wrong at all in the slightest for keeping the money, but do whats right morally.

Adam left a message yesterday giving him until Friday to bring the rest of the money and pick up the tractor. If he doesn't hear back, the tractor will be sold to the second interested party that is planning on coming over on Friday.

Never heard a word from the guy. Sold it to the second interested guy for more than the first guy was going to pay (and he took it with him right away). Plus that $100 the first guy put down is still sitting here.

The $100 is yours for the inconvenience, do NOT return it if he/she calls or comes to the house. This happened to me at least five times ($100 each :D) and the one guy who came to my house demanding I return the money was escorted away by Milwaukee police for harassment and was never heard from again…..:thumbsup

For us craigslist has been better for buying than selling. You get people who obviously can read the ad when we say it doesn't fit something and those people still come over to waste my time just to find out, yeah it still won't fit what they have. Or the time when we were giving away a solid oak entertainment center, bunch of no shows, one guy sends my wife an emails full of swearing because we said someone else was already coming for it. In the end we just took it down to goodwill.

Fine by me, allows me to repost the same ad at the top of the list......;)

CL added a function to bump it, instead of relisting to try to curb the overposting.

Bumping is the same as relisting, still after the ad has been posted for 48 hours. The big difference now is bumping (relisting) is much easier in that doing so requires less steps.....

My ad can be flagged once an hour and one minute after every flag I can repost the same ad at the top of the list. If you try to post an identical or somewhat identical ad (not flagged) before the 48 hours requirement CL will not allow the listing. I believe this is CL's method of allowing legit ads being flagged for no good reason to be reposted immediately. The chances of somebody sitting online all day flagging the same ad over and over again is very unlikely.....

If I give anything for free I just post it in the free section the day or two before I think the garbage will take it. No contact just here it is, on the curb, go get it :D . Someone took some sod that way last fall, last entertainment center I just put out without posting anything and I think the garbage guys took it. Was in decent shape but in a few peices from making it fit down our basement steps :goof .
