I'm simply amazed. This company has seemed to rectify the problem of earlier 3D printers lack of smoothness on the surface. Right now, resin casters are filling the need for modellers with different bodies or parts not available in the current kit selections. If the cost situation could be overcome, all a person would need to do is place a 3D scan of a, let's say a 69 Skylark body as no kit exists for this, and create a master for molding it in resin. Could also reproduce an obsolete part like an older connector for a wiring harness instead of cobbling something together or using an old piece which may have cracks or damage.

$50'000 printer + $100 per cubic inch.

Yea, cost is definitely a prohibiting factor.

There's also an open source project called the "Mendel" that can be built for a couple hundred bucks ;) Definitely considering building something like this someday when I have a ton of extra time. I'd use it to print patterns, and then cast those patterns out of aluminum. Booyah.

I've had the opportunity to use Dimension3D printers over the last year. Truly wonderful machines! Also, they are making double-digit drops in price on an anual basis. It won't be long before a Chinese or Korean make will cut the major manufacturers by 50%.

Imagine being able to make your own parts for your car. You draw them up on cad one evening, hit print, and the part is ready the next morning.

Think Sintering!

There are new 3d printers that actually deposit metal powder and make a ceramic shell at the same time.

Haha yeah. I heard that song one day and realized it summed up the way I feel about religion, politics, etc.

Think there was a bit of a editing room magic happening there between him scanning it in and then changing the color on a part. How did the scan pic up internal parts? How did it manage to differentiate the worm gear & internal pin as a perfect separate piece from the wrench and lower jaw?

I mean it's still cool, but I bet there's a moderate amount of work required on cleaning up the 3D scan before printing. Not like how it appears in the vid where your scan it then walk over to the computer and print it out.
