My 97 subaru legacy outback will not shift out of 4th gear, I was getting off the interstate and came to the stop light and went to put it in first and it wont budge. I limped it back home by feathering the clutch. After I got it home I looked at it further and I see nothing that is popping out at me as the problem. The shifter wont budge at all I tried with all my strength almost to the point of snapping the shifter off and it still wouldnt budge. Before this happened my shifter linkage was worn out and would rattle and the synchro going into 3rd was a little crunchy once the car warmed up. Can you point me at some areas to look at? Im guessing the damage is internal and the transmission is completely screwed but I thought I would ask here first.

You most likely broke some synchronizer keys.
Doesn't matter what exactly though, that trans will have to come out.
Positive it's internal :(
