So driving the Miata home today I noticed alot of valve train noise.
I looked at the temp gauge and is was about 3/4 to the top. I pulled
over and let the car cool down. Upon start up it did sound a bit better.

This is the noise it is making now:

Guess it is time to let it sit for awhile and decide if I just
want to put another 1.8l in there or something else.
I think a 1.8l with a 2.0l head with some work done to it
would be plenty of fun for me. Or it can sit for a couple
years until I have the funds to do a Monster Miata or
something like that
'

Going to pull the valve cover see if anything is loose in there.
Pretty sure those are rods knocking??

I'd swap in THIS s2000's engine into a miata:

But that's it.

Ls swaps are gay..

Which would mean it would pair well with a miata....

That S2000 is BAD ASS!

OP it sounds like something def broke up top. Pull off the valve cover and take a look.

I pulled the cam cover and don't see anything obvious.
Tomorrow I will pull the cams and check for a broke
valve springs and collapsed lifters.

I had it for awhile guess it was just never mentiomed on here.
MOstly was my weekend car with plans for handling upgrades
and a little more power.

It's like driving a gocart.

LS swap

Or a Ford Windsor swap. Stan Bartol's Windsor swapped Miata looks like it was put in at the factory and it runs like a scalded dog.

while an LSx swap into a miata would be cool... i have always wanted a bridged N/a 13b powered miata... that would be a fun car!

A prepped 1.8l with a 2.0l head with some porting and polishing work
would put out enough power for a Miata. If I could get 175whp
in a 2300# car that would be plenty for awhile.

I want to get the big break kit, some 15" wheels with 205/50/15's.
Get a harddog roll bar, and some chassis stiffening.

A LSX swap with a T56 would be great, but a little cost prohibitive
right now.

Yup going to need a new engine. All kinds of bearing material in the cam bearings.
Actually had groves in them. I only removed the exhaust cam and after what I saw
figured that was as far as I needed to go today

Bolts to the trans...

Looks like the project is going to have to be postponed for
awhile. My first thought if I did do a swap would be the
Monster Miata Kit. I know my way around the ford engine
more than any other. And with a mild 347, 350hp or so to the
wheels in such a light car would be a blast. And the cost wouldn't
be much more than a built 1.8l these llittle engines sure cost alot
to build. I figured 1/2 the parts 1/2 the price.

I was looking at the Flyin' Miata LS swap too. I would probably get
a LQ4 5.3 aluminum block engine and trans, wich can be picked
up for a reasonable price and should make plenty of power.

But I have plenty of time to plan and scheme.

Yeah I saw the one on Gears.
I would want to do mine like
a tribute to Shellby Cobra.
Hood Scoop, Sidepipes, Fenders flared.
No crazy body mods though.

I did have the idea to integrate a 96-98
Cobra front bumper cover. Don't know
I am no good with photoshop so it will
be pics and tracing paper to see what
I can come up with.

LQ4 is not an aluminum 5.3L. You're speaking of the LM4 or L33. Both are pretty hard to find. The LC9 is the Gen IV version and believe it or not is more common (because they put it in trucks and SUVs, and were really popular in the XFE trucks during the last oil crisis).

If you're going to wait for an engine, why not wait for a L9H, L92, or L94?

There are also the L76 and L96s (6.0L). And a bunch of others. Lots of options.
