Prob not, but you could get a tinted plate cover.

Doubt it. Cops will give bikes a brake on plate stuff sometimes (vertical mount, under seat etc), but probably not for a car. There's probably some fine print about not tampering with plates. You can artificially "weather" your plates, which I've seen some folks do. Looks kinda cool if you are keeping a patina on the ride (although not really a good fit for your clean bug)

Small world, I been thinking about painting a hobbyist plate the same colors (black/tan) to match a van I might buy. I know for a fact modifying a WI-DOT issued license plate in ANY WAY is illegal. However, I believe the chance of getting caught with these colors are very slim because the 'factory' dark green/yellow colors are very similar to black/tan. Eric if you go ahead with this do your best to make the paint fit/finish look as close to the original as possible. This will lower the chance of a law person noticing the different colors.....

There was a guy at the EAA show 2 years ago that painted his hobbyist plate black with silver letters to match his GT500, never heard a word from the PoPo about it.

Me to, and if I do I suppose I can just keep the non painted plate in the car with me if I need to switch it out. They send 2 and expect you to display both on a hobbyist car, yea right.

I know a guy with a 32 hiboy that painted his red with yellow letters to match his car. It's been like that forever. DMV is getting real picky now. Make sure you have all your ducks in a row.

I agree, do not paint it. Collector and Hobbyist plates are on the look out.

What happened is too many people took Grandmas old Buick and registered it as a collector or hobbyist when it was nothing more than a rust bucket. Collector/Hobbiest plates are a one time fee, no yearly registration fee. The State got tipped off of this and is now requiring full pictures, full descriptions etc before registering the vehicle. In some cases, you might need to report to the local DMV with your vehicle for a local inspection. Seat belts, fenders, exhaust, bumpers etc are all verified.

I just applied and received collector plates for my rust bucket `88 Ford Aerostar without an issue. I was required to submit basic exterior, interior, and engine pictures but nothing more. The DMV makes the laws; if the vehicle is 20 or more years old collector plates are an option. If anything vehicles like mine have everything required (seatbelts, fenders, exhaust, bumpers, etc.) to receive collector plates and older vehicles many people consider as 'real collector vehicles' do not. Everybody's definition of a collector 'anything' is different but the law is the law. If the DMV is seriously concerned about people abusing 'special' plates the law will change.....

With that said I have a strong hunch the one time application fee will increase significantly in the near future to $250, you heard it here first.....:)

That would get rid of the guys with 1989 Nissan Crapster type cars.

Well I did it, gloss black powdercoat the entire plate then took a D/A to the raised letters/numbers, going to leave it like this for awhile and see how the metal holds up.

That looks amazing Eric...!!! Since you originally posted this thread I thought about the best way to paint the raised areas more times than I can remember. I did not come up with a method I felt confident would result in above average results. Not once did I think of sanding the raised areas down, I need to see this in person.....:thumbsup

It turned out sweet, debating on clearing it or leaving it figured I would give it till winter and see how it holds up first.
