looking to put a 60amp panel in a detached garage can anyone tell me if by code i need to use a main break panel or if a main lug will be ok. Thank you.

Main Lug is fine, just feed it from a 60 amp breaker in your main panel in the house.

Depending on how far away your detached garage is you might want to upsize your 60 amp feeders so that you don't get any voltage drop.

Also I would suggest putting in a ground rod out at the garage.
