So I wasn't really enthused with the WRX and decided for the heck of it to take it CarMax
and see what they'd give me for it. It actually wasn't half bad. I then took it over to the
dealer that I bought it from and it was even better.

Is there really that bad a shortage of used cars or is the WRX a rare case? I started to
look at used car prices (for what I might be interested in) and they don't seem all that
out of line so I'm wondering how trade in prices (or in this case an out right buy) could
be so good. Any thoughts?

I traded in my 09 civic si for 17k with 30k miles on it. You can buy a new one for 21k, so you could imagine my jaw dropped when they offered 17k. I think it has to do with the car itself, if it is car in demand they will pay the money to get it on their lot i guess.

There is a shortage in general for used cars. most people are hanging onto cars for longer then they used to

Depends entirely on dealerships and how quickly they think they can get rid of the car, or bury the money on it. Holz gave me $2K more for my Trailblazer then the 4-5 other dealerships I tried working a deal with.

One thing I find interesting about the used car market is how cars are holding their resale value better.

In 2003, I bought a 1992 Acura Integra (11 years old) for $2,700.
Today, an 11 year old RSX will cost about three times that.

You have to take inflation into the equation though, i highly doubt a 92 integra was more than 20k like an RSX was.

WTF.

Carmax offered me $1400 for an 03 PT Crusier touring edition with 130k miles in mint condition. This was in December 2010. I sold the car private party for $3100.
