Car will be here Wednesday, so thought I would start a mini build thread for shits n giggles as it seems theres a few people on here into these cars. I am lowering it as far as I can before I bottom out on my driveway and possibly getting a few cool accessories for it.

I bought a 3" narrowed beam from a guy, drop shocks from Airkewld, drop spindles from CB Performance, narrowed tierods. Also ordered bigger tie rod ends and I am drilling the spindles tomorrow at work to accept a bushing from the underside of the spindle so I can " flip " the tierods to avoid bumpsteer. As low as I am going, the angle for the tierods is going to be drastic without flipping. The flip should make them pretty level and solve that issue. Anyways I painted the beam and heres the first pic:

Oh yea, a shitty pic of the car too from previous owner:

Will get some better pics hopefully wednesday

Very cool VW , I always liked the old ones (60's) . That one would look nice with the single blade bumpers.

Here's a couple of ideas http://www.oldbug.com/newmanvw.htm

Drilled out the tie rod mounts on my drop spindles today so I can run 69+ bug tie rods upside down to correct terrible tierod angles from dropping it so low.

And drilled/tapped this cast aluminum skull I've had sitting around forever to use as a shift knob. A little cheesy, but I like it:

Didn't unload my camera yet, so far these are just phone pics. Heres one the wife took on thursday:

We had to shorten the tierods 2 inches on both sides as the ones that came with the new front end were way wrong. Something is funny with the carb so I dropped that off at MOFOCO to get tested and see what the deal with the electric choke is, and in the mean time I'm trying to track down a new master as mine is leaking like a siv. Also having problems with the front end binding so I am off to buy a grease gun and MOAR LUBE. Heres a teaser of where it may or may not sit height wise, I might keep it 2 inchs off the ground for now and get used to driving it like that before slamming it.

I wanna go lower still, going to drive it like this for awhile and work out the bugs. Its running a little funny and stopping a little funny so it wont be on the road till tuesday or so :)

Whats going on with it? Binding in travel? Its two parrallel torsion bars in steel tubes for protection. Preload on each bar is set with the adjuster, which can be used to set suspension height.

Feel free to stop by and show me whats up, the suspension bottoms out and does not comeback up, aka no travel. Also one of the trailing arms is loose in the tube, does that mean a needle bearing is shot? I gotta make my own tierods too since the ones I got are too thin and bend every time the car gets jacked up

Sent back the beam to the guy I bought it from, turned out it was missing bearings and the adjusters were welded in wrong. Luckily the guy I bought it from returned a good portion of the purchase price on the package front end I bought and I kept the rest of the goods and ordered a CB 2" Narrowed Beam with new leafs, tierods, swaybar, and some small stuff.

is the rear camber normal? Is there a fix for that rear tire eater?

pOrk
06-14-2011, 05:10 AM
Damn you sound old kelly! A 2 inch tranny raise would help with negative camber but hurts re-sale, as the car currewntly sits everything is easily reversible. Tires are cheap for 15" rims and its not a daily driver so I ain't too worried about it :)

Rides nice, makes contact with the ground once and awhile but then again I've been driving it without shocks in the front and the ones I have in back are a bit too soft. I just put new oil filled shocks on the front today that I had to order, going to see how it goes once the rain clears up and possibly ordering a set for the rear as well. Also just finished installing a front sway bar, so should handle great by the weekend :)

Any vw mechanics here? I am having a hard time tracking down an oil leak and I also believe there may be excess crankcase pressure as I have some oil coming out of the breather tube off of the oil filler neck. Would like to get the leaking fixed asap as the oil is getting on the nelt which is causing charging issues. Also bought a new distrubuter that I could use a hand installing / timing out

pOrk
07-15-2011, 10:35 PM
Screw the oil leak, driving it anyways. Bad news is I need standoffs, I hate how they look but engine is running HOT.

Thanks Guy and Tina for pics! Heres one from Tina's super phone:

The standoffs help the engine bay breath better, usually a necessity when stuffing a 1600 into a car that came with a 1200. Heres a few pics that guy took last night:

I rode in a new mustang with an air ride kit and it handled soooo much better than stock. It was really surprising to me, I hadn't had much experience with air ride and I was expecting a bouncy ride. The thing handled like it was on rails!
