Looking at some job options has me looking into daily commute length. Right now I am lucky with a 3.5 mile commute, but am looking at a position with a 28 mile commute. How long is your drive to work one-way? Miles and minutes please.

30 miles one way & about 25-30min depending on weather + traffic. I ride the stretch of 94 East/West from Hwy F in Jefferson County to Barker/Bluemound in Waukesha.

The construction on 94 is making my commute hell right now...

I used to drive 70+miles a day for 3 years now back to 12 miles round trip sometimes to get into the field you want and get the experiance you have to drive hell I even worked 3rd shift and 2nd to get where I am today, sometimes a long trip home is just what you need to de-stress after the day

I go from Waukesha/Pewaukee border to downtown Milwaukee. On average it is about a 35-40 minute drive. With the construction and traffic in the morning going past the Zoo interchange and through the Miller Park area, etc... it can be a pain in the ass. In winter, it can be an hour with the idiot drivers out there.

it honestly isn't that bad though. The stick shift STI it sucks, but when I would take other cars, just sit back and relax listen to some music. It's a nice calming down time for when I get home or get to the gym.

30 miles... Takes 45 minutes.

Just gave up my 3 mile/10 minute commute.

IMO 15-30 minute commute is ideal. Anything less and your still waking up at work or in work mode when you get home. Anything more, the drive drag's on you. I do miss going home for lunch though.

21 miles one way. ~30 min if I drive it (city/hwy). If I bike, it's just over 25 miles and takes 1 hours and 20 min...if winds aren't bad.

I only go from Shorewood to downtown, so i think thats like 6 Miles, 8-12 minutes. It can be a few more if I hit the on ramps at the wrong time.

My last job was 40mi and took 50-60min each way. I did that for 8 years. My current job is about 4 miles and takes me about 10-15 min depending on traffic. Not only am I happier with the shorter drive, it was like a $2/hr raise in gas savings.

The job I'm at right now is about 1.5 miles and it takes just under 5 minutes.

But I could also be sent somewhere that is 2 hours away so this doesn't really count for me lol.

38 miles one way, 35 minutes there and 50 minutes home due to the construction near the airport. I left a job that was 12 miles one way. So far the drive at the new job doesn't bother me but the cost in gas does. Averaging about $75-$90 a week in gas driving my truck. After I pick up my motor I'm selling it and buying a Civic.

I'd be down with that, but I have killer hours not many others have. I work 6am - 2 pm. If yours were close we could work something out perhaps? Your shop is like 5 minutes from mine.

I live 2.3 miles from the expressway if I take the most direct route. It takes 6-11 minutes to get to the expressway.

I am either on the expressway 18.6 miles or 22.3 miles. It takes however long I want it to take between 14 minutes and 40 minutes.

I then have either another .5 miles or 2.9 miles. This takes either 3 minutes or 6 minutes.

The fastest I usually get to work is 21 minutes. The average is 28 minutes. The worst so far has been an hour.

Prior to this, the furthest I had ever lived from job was 4.1 miles or ~20 minutes in the worst traffic on earth. On average, it was 11 minutes door to door.

When considering a commute, unless you absolutely love driving, consider it as unpaid work. Or factor it in to your salary. Also factor in fuel and wear/tear on the vehicle. Also consider the fact that "running home" in the middle of the day now costs a lot and takes a lot of time. I consider the time lost to commuting and the inability to "run home" during the day lost opportunity (and it has a value).

The benefit to having a longer commute is that you aren't going to "just run into work" on the weekend, you aren't going to stay as late, et cetera. There is a benefit to commuting to "the city" as you can pick things up on the way home from work if you live in "the sticks" like I do. Menards has gotten tens of thousands out of me in the last six months "after work". OK, I'm rethinking maybe that's not a benefit.

I would consider an even longer commute but I would need to recalculate.

41 miles 50-60 minutes depending on traffic and the route I take from Racine to Brookfield. Long commutes are ok with the right mind set. It is a chance to relax and unwind. I find talk radio or a good comedy podcast make the time fly. You can NOT allow traffic to stress you out or you lose.

I can avoid the freeway completely and have a nice leisurely 75 minute cycle ride to work.

On the days I don't feel like coming in I can work from home. I get squirrely if I stay home more than 2 days a week though.

2.8 miles and 7-15 minutes...7 minutes is if I take the expressway to avoid Greenfield Ave stoplights, only if I go home for lunch is it that quick. If I hit every light and theres more than typical traffic, 15 minutes. Usually 11-12. If I bike it takes 11-20 minutes if downhill/Greenfield Ave or longer if the Henry Aaron trail. Yep, not sure why I drive :D .

I used to commute through college from Muskego to UWM, then my first real job from Muskego then New Berlin back to Muskego then West Allis to Glendale, so I realize how lucky I am to have such a short trip. I didn't really mind the drive most times, like said if you have the right mindset. But gaining 2-3 hours per week of my own time and saving probably $20-40 in gas per week makes the choice (if there was one) pretty apparent. Working from home would be nice some times but I'd get too distracted for my own good :D .

I swear there have to be more inconsiderate d-bags on greenfield ave from 76th-60th between 3:30-4pm than any other stretch of road in Wisconsin that I've ever driven on. That's the only part of my short commute I don't like.

A big factor is if you hit stop and go traffic during your commute.

They are pretty bad...I can't stand that stretch either. Might check the weather again and see what day(s) I can take my bike just thinking of it.

what do you do? I couldn't work out of my house, I would hate it. Gotta get out in the real world.I own a civil engineering consulting firm with 34 employees spread across WI, IL, and MI. Everyone in my company works from their home.

I do get out every so often to look at a project or go to a meeting. But 95% of the time I am at home. If I get sick of working I can go out to the garage and mess around with my cars or go for a ride or get drunk or whatever. It's nice to be able to wear shorts or sweats and a t-shirt most of the time. And to get up at 8:30 or 9 am everyday... that's actually the best part of the deal.
