I am picking up a set of PI heads with the PI cams in them already, what im wondering is what other odds and ends will i need.I already have the Pi uppermanifold on my stock heads but will i need 2002+ 4.6 vavle covers or timing chain cover? i tried searching the net and this site but find eveything but the info i need.Anyone ever did this swap that can throw me some tips?

HERES THE GOODIES, and yes...I plan on paying someone to help me out.It seems pretty easy to do but i will have no idea how to set and remove the timing chain propperly.From what the guy said i should be able to reuse my current 1997 npi valve covers and timing chain cover.The job looks like it shouldnt take more than a weekend. a day if you go at it non stop.Id love to have these in by end of summer but.................who knows.Anyone wanan help? i can get some beer and cash(i dont drink tho,sorry).?.

Doing the pi swap is really easy.....you should be able to do it your self using a haynes manual. I am sure you have one considering all of the "Premium" parts you have in your car.

Anyhow, this is the last free advice that you will get from me. The front cover dosnt need to be changed. I believe your valve covers should be all right too, provided that the heads you bought came from the same plant as the heads that you have on there now.....(yes there is a difference). I recommend that you get a new timing chain set, as well as new guides (notice I said NEW. That is off the shelf parts, not someone's junk that they dont want any more). That will help eliminate any problems that you might encounter in the future, such as chain failure. The biggest problem that you will have is degreeing the cams. It is a long and involved process. With out the right tools, you are bound to mess something up. It is better to pay a shop to do it. It wont be cheap, however the money spent will be well worth it, and you will have less down time on your vehicle than you would if you did it your self.


If you insist on doing it your self or having your buddys do it for you, go to corral.net, stangnet.com, and then you always have your friends on chitown. However I wouldnt go on reviving dead threads over there to show that you know something....They dont like that too much.

And im taking your advice on those new parts,it would be stupid not to replace those kinda parts while they will be exposed and easy to get to.Thats why my front end turned into the project it did.If im getting it done,its gotta be done correctly.This will also give me time to replace my sht stock manifold that got F'd up when someone helped me put on the exhaust in the winter.Plus then maby ille dremel out the manifolds abit and wrap them just for fun.From what people told me its not really worth it go get headers or aftermarket manifolds for my engine, unless i plan on rerouting my steering( NOPE)..Adn when i get around to this project i dont expect it will be done it a day or even a weekend.Id like it done in a 2 week span, thats a realistic time schedule.Things never go as planned.

Yes, essentually, yes. Comp cams defines it as "The purpose of degreeing a camshaft is to correct the errors and tolerances in the machining processes of the engine that can affect camshaft timing." In a nutshell, it is the most accurate way to make sure that both cams are timed correctly with each other as well as the crankshaft. This will optimize the performance gains that you will get from your upgrade, and also make sure that your car will not run like shit after you get it all back together. This is not like a 4 banger, where you can just leave the plastic timing cover off till you make sure you have the timing right. You do not want to get it all back together and have to take it all apart because you have a missfire on the number 6 cyl. This is not something to be done by a beginner, and for that matter, requires specialty tools that you probably are never going to need again unless you are a mechanic.

As far as headers go, unless you are going with a supercharged or a turbo setup, they are a pointless addition to your 2v mod motor. At most they add 5hp and are used for sound reasons. THe factory exhaust manifolds are good in their own right, and are not as restrictive as the 5.0's.

Both of the mods listed above are things that I would pay someone, who knows what they are doing, to install. I am all for doing things your self, however if you dont know what you are doing, or for that matter have the space and tools to do the job correctly, then it is time to walk away and just pony up the cash. For example, here are the first few steps for doing headers on a mod motor:

1) install engine hoist/support.
2) undo engine mounts
3) tilt engine up......

Get what I am saying here?

You have been given several different websites to go to that have a ton of information on how to do the swap, or people who have actually done the swap before. You have also been given the website of one of the top modular ford shops in se wisconsin. Make sure you do a search and for that matter, make sure you post it up in the right section..

On that note, what you choose to do is up to you, but dont come up here saying :I did the swap, now my engine runs like shit" or "I cant get my car back together, HELP!" because you probably wont get it.

YA i plan on paying someone to do it.I jsut mainly wanted to get all the needed stuff for them to do the job.I just sprung a tiny tiny leak on my manifold, the RTV failed and i have a pinhole thats leaking coolant now, so i need to remove my mani and re RTV it, but it sux because ille be half way to the heads and i just wont be able to do them becuase of my lack of skills.But i cannot have it leaking coolant.ANd NO this isnt our only car, we do have a 2003 truck..Thats what i get for putting a PI mani on NPI heads.Thats why do it rite the 1st time applys to me once again.But tomorrow im just gonna try and push some RTv into the spot and see if that will hold untill i can get the heads and cams on,if not ille have to look into things..

Really? You want to do it RIGHT but you are just planning on on "pushing" some RTV in there in the hopes that it will fix the problem? SURE that will work........and then reality will happen and it will hold for at most three days. What do you have going on today or tomorrow that you can't take the time to take off the intake and redo the seal? That is the right way to do it, not this half assed bullshit that you plan on doing. You just contradicted your self in less than a sentence.

This. I tossed the idea around of pi swapping my town car, not so much for performance, but because its kinda a slug. Then I thought about the work involved time/money. Fuck it. ille be starting it tomorrow after the RTV sets, if it leaks then i some how cracked the PI manifold or messed up the RTV (doubt it)..I made shur to RTV off the coolant ports so the npi heads matched the PI manifold.Also while i had it all there i cleaned and dressed things up.I also found a ground wire to something that was unhooked and i hooked it back up.I also had a chance to compare the npi to pi ports and what a diffrence there is.Im anxious for tomorrow, wish me luck guys..

No, just no, you didn't. Of any car you could pick to say you beat with your heap, this has go to be one of the dumbest choices. The SRT-4 is one of the few cars that CAN be fuckin quick for a relatively low budget. Put about $1500-2000 into an srt4 (finding good deals or used parts, like you love) and thats about 300whp. There's a damn recipe for it, and at least 4 members that I know own or have owned Srt's to attest to that.

I'm not understanding why someone doesn't offer to help work in his car. Seems like a nice enough guy. Sure, he can't spell, and his taste in cars might not be that great, but he sure does try hard. Didn't everyone have that first or second car they put way to much money into? I know I sure did. My first car was a 4 door 1980 Olds Cutlass. I spent about 5x what I paid for it in stereo equipment alone, got the windows tinted, and put some exhaust on it. You have to remember that he spent some time in prison, so his "real-world" people skills are probably way behind where they should be.
