Washer help

My father has an older maytag washer that is not spinning, But does move back and fourth. I replaced the belts and the springs that move the tensioner seem to be fine. but when I turned it on after replacing the belt the pully just got hot and the rubber smelled up the basement so I turned it off obviously. Anyone have any experiance or knowledge about this.
