Hello All,

I was checking the spark plug wires on my Olds in an attempt to diagnose why it runs rough. I set my multimeter to 20,000k and it read 6.xx.

Does this mean 60,000 ohms or 6,000 ohms?

Thanks

Set your meter to the upside down horse shoe, if option press auto range. Touching the two ends of meter together is what you hope to see for display. 20,000k would be kind off unlikely in a plug wire, as junk as possible while still not broken in half :)

Use a lower setting then 20k... like 200. The reading you are getting is likely 6 ohms.

I was told that typical 3800 spark plug wire resistance should be around 5k to 15k ohms, depending on length. To check this, I set the meter to 2k ohms (everything setting starts with a 2) and it maxed out. I then set it to 20k and I got the 6.xx reading.

What do you think the resistance should be? The same manual I was looking at said to replace the wires if the exceed 30k.

That would be 6k then. 60k would max out atthe 20k setting.

I thought a rule of thumb for this was roughly 1,000 ohms per foot.
