Currently working on my basement and have a few questions for when I get to wiring. One is I am looking at adding a sub panel to the main. The main is a 200 amp panel and was wondereing if I have to add another 200 amp or can it be a 100 amp panel. Also how do I figure which type of breaker I need to use, whether it is a single or double pole type. I guess depending on the amperage of each light will depend on the size of the pole breaker.

First off, what are you trying to accomplish with adding a sub panel? Will this be in the garage? Or is it for more circuits in the house?

Wouldn't another panel require another feed from the power company? You can't feed 200A panel to a 200A panel. If you have 200A worth of breakers in your panel, it's at capacity. You would then need to get another termination point from the power company to feed another 100 or 200 amp panel.
