Dropped off the seats, door panels and rear armrest/upper panels at the interior guy, talked to a friend last night that has the parts I need for my carb. Things are FINALLY coming together for the 64 to get on the road. I am so excited:headbang

8.5" 3.42 rear from 71-72 Cutlass with bolt in axles, none of that c-clip crap:goof
Painted it before I put it in. Used it to replace the original 8.2" 3.08 rear

New to me aluminum valve covers, very tall, and now I switched to manual brakes because of them, and the fact it cleans up the engine compartment.

Rad and trans cooler in

Changed to manual steering, again cleans up engine bay, plus it going to have relatively narrow tires in the front, probably around 205's

Ordered the window sweep things from Year One today, surprisingly they were cheaper than ebay with the coupon code for 15% off, of course they aren't in stock, but the ones on ebay weren't either, so I went with the cheaper ones :)

Well we ran into a couple snags, the seat covers I got from Legendary had the covers for the front seat backs made wrong. The side cut that gets hidden by the side chrome trim was made almost two inches to high, so the trim won't be able to cover it. Got a call from my interior guy telling me about the problem yesterday. Today I ran out there to see the problem and then we called the manufacturer. They are having them picked up tomorrow to fix them. But the rear seat and the front seat bottoms that are done look AWESOME! The guy doing my interior, Don at Inside Rides (http://insiderides.com/), is great and couldn't ask for better service from him.

I will also say that Legendary is giving good service after the problem was found, just wish there wouldn't have been a problem to be found.:goof

Now if Year One would just get the window sweeps to me, the door panels can get finished up.

Rocket Power

The estimate for the seats was $60/cover so about $360 for the seats, with me supplying the front foam and front and rear covers. He said usually the foam people bring in doesn't fit well and he has them send it back, but the stuff I got actually does work. I bought the better of the 2 choices Legendary had. For the door panels and rear armrests its another $300-350 ish, have to take the stuff off the old ones like trim and the sheetmetal from the top half and glue that plus the sweeps I am waiting on. The rear armrests are metal, kind of double thick pizza box sized and need the material glued on. I think the panels and armrests are probably as much of a pita as the seats. lol All together the estimate for everything was $680-700. The upholstery guy on national in stallis wanted almost $500 just for the seats.

Don is an awesome guy to work with, I have nothing but positive things to say about him. I got recommendations from 2 different people to use him and they were right.

Well I thought today was going to be crap after I spewed 3 qts of new oil out of my bike onto my driveway, thanks to the oring on the oil filter cover plate moving out of place while putting it back together.:fire

I decided to try the second radiator hose I bought to see if it would work. Since the aluminum rad is a universal piece and the engine in it now is a 455 and the original 330 had a one year only water pump that exits on the opposite side, this was a custom application. I ended up finding a hose at Farm and Fleet on their hanging rack while getting a oil filter for my bike, that looked like it may work. BINGO! Just had to trim about 3/4" off of the end. Now I don't have to use a "ribbed for her pleasure" hose :banana Its a dayco 70680 looks like its for Ford vans with a straight 6 from 79-90 :rolf
So another Ford part on my Olds.

Slept for a couple hours when I got home from work this morning , then went out to play on the car. Radiator hoses finished. Heater hoses done. Trans filter changed and 11 of 13 pan bolts put in ( didn't feel like removing crosssmember today and the flange blocks 2 of the bolt holes pan only had a few in it to hold it on when I put it in). Trans lines ran, though I'm not happy with the routing and I am going to pick up some AN 90* fittings. Mounted the alternator mount, which then showed me the 80's alternator I was going to run won't work, add that to the parts list :(

But at least I got a few things done on this miserable day. :)

I like the color for the seats will go real good in there, you repainting car same color it is ?? Or does it even need repainting ?

Rocket Power
04-19-2011, 01:13 PM
Looks like a previous owner was going to repaint it, did a light scuffing/sanding on it, not sure if it'll buff back out or not. When it does get repainted the lower color will be a factory 1964 light blue metallic like this one http://prepmyride.com/prep_my_ride_002.htm and also keeping the white roof because I love the factory 2 tone cars. Mine was originally maroon/burgandy lower with white top and black interior, but since it already was repainted a blue, I figured I'd do it the way I would've ordered it, color wise anyway.:) Besides, for a summer car I don't want to be baking on black vinyl. lol

Rocket Power

They were just on there because I had to bring something out to Colorado to throw on the car to load it on the trailer. The plan is dog dish caps, which I finally completed a set of,1964 was a one year only for those, and possibly some Olds SSII's if I want to change it up, as I have a bunch of those. Never was really a slot fan, but have had this set for 14 years or so.lol

So since I after a trip to the museum with my daughter and her friend, I went out in the garage to play a bit. Took off the trim that separates the upper and lower body colors to see how many of the right clips I was going to need.

I want to kick the lazy ass that tried to use the not fitting push clips right in the balls. Instead of getting the right ones , the lazy ass drilled new smaller holes next to the right ones. and of course left the other ones open. Water leak anyone? :fire:fire:fire

The new holes have the arrows pointing to them. what an a-hole:fire

Over the last couple days I have been trying to get the carpet situated. Not entirely pleased by the way the carpet was cut, seems a little short on the pass front, could really use another inch or two.

Went to Jefferson to see what I could find, and found Becky, Matt and Jbiscuit.:goof The only car thing I found was an set of old Monroe shocks new in the box for the rear of the car (and possibly an air cleaner). The shocks definitely looked like they've been around in the box since the 60's-70's even the car drawings on the box looked like they were from the 60's:rolf

Well with the help of my daughter the brakes are bled. Ended up having to replace a line that I already replaced but for some reason wouldn't seal to the dist. block. (No it wasn't me, it was flared from the factory ;) ) Tried changing the block and still leaked. Had to replace the line which of course was that hardest one to do. Had to snake it from the dist block on the drivers frame rail, around the header, follow the crossmember, and back around the other header. Finished bolting the trans pan on. Should be able to drop it off the jackstands soon and roll it out to put the interior in. :)

While I was working on trimming the carpet, I noticed that a previous owner hacked into the wiring harness to put in a stereo.

So out comes the dash since it'll be easier to straighten out the wiring

http://usera.ImageCave.com/vista461/64cutlass/dash%20out2.jpg

I hadn't planned on pulling it out until I replaced the dash pad, but since I'm not a fan of electrical fires...... ;)

What really pissed me off was he hacked out the radio area for a DIN sized radio >:( >:( >:( >:(

http://usera.ImageCave.com/vista461/64cutlass/hacked%20dash2.jpg

Of course this is a floor shift dash and my spares are column shift. What an ahole.

Then while dealing with that I notice that Legendary didn't make the pleats in the rear seat top and bottom the same. So the spacing is off between the top and bottom. DAMMIT. I guess I'm just good ride it out, because I'm sick of dealing with sending it back and having stuff redone.

you know I would tend to agree But I am sure you paid a pretty penny for it and it should be right for how much they charge us for this kinda stuff I say take it back and have it redone right thats what you paid them for and dammit if its not right get it right ..........Sorry for venting but these guys charge an arm and leg as it is, and they know you will not want to have it redone so they will just keep doing till it is costing them more money than it worth doing right the first time !!

contact American Autowire and see if you can get a replacement dash harness for the car. After one electrical fire I won't play games with these old wires especially if its been hacked...thats a potential hazard. Get a new harness and be done. Do the same with the engine and front lamp harnesses also. Electrical fires suck!!

Checked out the dash harness today. He actually didn't do a bad job. I thought it was just going to be just twisted together wires, but he actually soldered the wires together. They are for the stereo power. I pulled out the other stereo wires and now it looks alot better. Still pissed he cut the dash for a DIN radio though. It is a floor shift dash, not as common as the column shift one.

Rocket Power
05-22-2011, 01:47 AM
Driveshaft and rear shocks in today. Not as much as I had planned on doing, but still chipping away. Hopefully have time to get the shifter linkage taken care of tomorrow, and maybe finish up the trans cooler connections.

Rocket Power
09-16-2011, 06:10 PM
Been working on the dash lately. Since a previous owner decided to wreck a floor shift dash putting in a DIN radio, I ended up using a spare 65 column shift dash I had. I had to repaint it since they inverted the colors between 64 and 65. I also found out they changed the fastener sizes to attach it to the car. Nice job GM, a 2 year dash and you couldn't even make the hardware the same. So I have to get some washers to do the final attachment.
I am using a 65 F-85 plastic dashpad since the padded dash mine came with was all cracked. It's a little warped but it'll do until I can find another good one. I put a 64 radio in the dash, although its not hooked up. I may mount a stereo in the glovebox.

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l295/vista461/tempdash.jpg

While I was setting the dash in place I noticed some wires hacked off.:fire

http://i99.photobucket.com/albums/l295/vista461/Mysterywires.jpg

After some investigation, I found out it was the intermediate harness that connects the dash harness to the console harness. Guess it would've been to easy to disconnect it at the console connector.:fire
So I disco'd that for now since I am not a fan of electrical fires. So I have to add that harness and the console harness to the shopping list.

That's about it for now:goof
