Hey all...

Looking to help a good friend of mine find a new home for his dog, Jackson.

Jackson is a 14 month old, intact male (ie, not neutered) Chesapeake Bay Retriever. Jackson still has some filling out to do...looks like he'll be around 80-85lbs, currently around 65-ish.

Chessie's are NOT for everyone...though he looks almost exactly like a chocolate lab, these dogs are NOT labs. Chessies, though extremely capable and willing to please, need an experienced dog owner. They can be obstinate and willful, especially with people they see as beneath them...Jackson is no exception.

I've always describe Chessies as "the pit bulls of retrievers". More muscular, intense, and protective than most labs. Very sweet and affectionate with his family, wary and not terribly outgoing with strangers (not aggressive either though). Jackson fits this to a tee.

Jackson does okay with other dogs, but due to his dominant disposition and that he's intact, he has gotten into scraps with other dominant type males neutered or not. The best situation would be Jackson going to a home with no dogs or cats. He could go to a home with other dogs, but best if they are either female or submissive or both. Jackson has just spent 10 days at my house with only a couple skirmishes...we separated him from our terrier male while gone, but he was fine with our male pug, so we left them together frequently.

Jackson at this age is probably too rambunctious for houses with children under 12. Definitely would do well with older kids, or kids with experience with more energetic dogs.

I will get pictures of Jackson up in a day or two...if you or anyone you know is interested, contact me via PM.

Chris,

I have a few chessie contacts I will try to get in touch with tonight. Hopefully we can find him the right home soon!

Thanks Megan! Jackson is truly a sweet dog that any chessie aficionado would adore.

What about his original breeder? Or was it a lovely BYB?

What about his original breeder? Or was it a lovely BYB?bought from a breeder from out of state...the owner who is surrendering would like it to be a local ideally as he would like to have that chance of seeing the dog even if infrequent. The owner loves Jackson to death and has had no issues with the dog...but is going through some life/work changes that's making life hard for the dog (IE, he's away from 5 in the morning until 9 at night some days); not an ideal life for a dog that needs the structure of the pack while also having fairly high exercise requirement. Dog was never destructive.

Did he sign a contract though? I know not many people obey the "surrendering" part of their contract, but it is a written contract.

Either way, I hope you are able to find him a new home and he gets fixed soon!
