I saw a 98'+ Camaro in Muskego the other day with *Z-29 Limited* stickers on the fenders and rear where Z-28 would be placed. I'm assuming its just a V-6 but has anyone heard of or seen this before?

It had dual tip *quad* exhaust but the passenger side had circular tips inside the square dual tips while the drivers side square tips had nothing inside....so a *fake* pipe perhaps?

Ok correct me if I'm wrong but doesn't Z-28 mean 2 door 8cylinder?

So Z-29 would be 2door 9 cylinder! Sounds like a rare find! :goof

I never heard that the 28 meant that....all the early Cavalier Z-24's are V-6's...and all the Z denotations are for higher end choices for each model whether advertised or not sometimes as far as I know. Z71, Z34, Z65(4th gen MCSS's ;) ), Z28, Z24, Z06...many others I'm forgetting.

There is no such thing. Z28 does not stand for anything, never did. Back in 1967 the Z/28 came from GM's desire to race in the Trans Am series. They developed the 302 powerplant to conform to Trans Am's maximum 5.0 liter displacement rule. The option code that got you the 302 engine? Z28. It was merely an option code designation for "Special Performance Package". Someone decided it sounded catchy and the rest is history.

This concludes your Musclecar history lesson for today.

I think that Z28 stands for option codes. If you look in any of the chevy books you will see option codes like Z06, ZL1, ZR1, ZQ3, L88, L89 and so on. They stand for a package of options. The "Z" code started in about 1963 with the Z06 code. The Z28 will stand for a package of say stiffer handleing pack, higher HP engine, sporty interior. I only have 1 book here at work and the ZL1 code stands for "aluminum 427 engine". I think they were also refered to as RPO = Regular Production Option.

Sorry, just thougth I would add my 2 cents worth. The Z28 does stand for something

Thats pretty much what I suspected. Just another 3 digit RPO code but for some reason GM with Chevies decides to use it as part of a model number on certain cars/trucks. I know Z29 wasn't a factory thing but wondered if it was just a tacky dealer add on or some aftermarket thing with any meaning behind it...kind of like *LS7* :D.

Thanks for the reminder on the Z-28's early history though 69LT1 :).

Exactly, they are just RPO codes for certain option/equipment groups.

LS1 is just the engine RPO code, nothing else... Z06 was a suspension and handling package on the 60's vette's so they brought it back to the 01+ vette's.

Z28 jsut happens to be by accident, 2dr 8 cyl, Beretta Z26 just happens to be 2dr 6 cyl and so on...
