View Full Version : Carb question - backfire

So I picked up a '70 land cruiser for plow duty and it worked great initially.

I got stuck then was really hammering on the gas. It seemed to get progressively worse, backfiring thru carb. Finished plowing and by the end of the night it barely moves without sounding like pocorn.

Any throttle stab or input makes it backfire. Idles fine and gently rolling into the throttle in neutral seems ok.

New cap, rotor. I replaced the power valve hose and the vac line going from distro to carb. Doesn't seem like any fuel is dumping when I hit the throttle by hand and it just falls on its face.

Accel pump, plunger?

You sure sound like your describing a lean misfire, looking in carb (engine off) do you see fuel being squirted while you mash accelerator? If not Im going with accelerator circut issue, leaking internaly and rolling down the barrels of carb I would guess a tore diaphram. Even with weak fuel pressure after an idle you should get a little "snap" off line before dying unless there is simply no fuel pressure, just enough to idle.

If its squirting fuel on accel timing issue we could guess.

Yeah engine on or off I dont see any fuel squirting down carb at any throttle position/mash

Accelerator circut, efi upgrade!

1 or 2 barrel?

2.

Ordered a rebuild kit for $20. Hopefully that will solve it for the time being. Maybe efi next winter.

I'm in agreement with russ...and have nothing further to add. :goof

Accelerator pump. It's probably running lean also. By any chance did you boil the gas in the float bowl while you were beating on it?

How long was the truck sitting before you got it?

Is there really any other option?:chair:

We could rig a GM TBI on that intake with some tech screws in no time, slip a GM pickup module under the cap and off ya go!

That old engine was really close to a Chevy six, no?

So, apparently the truck came with a "Carter" 1bbl carb from a early 70's Ford truck.

1972, 240 All/T, Carter, YF 6307 S D2PF-DA 3156

The truck was backfiring through the carb on transition between idle and load and there was fuel coming out of the vacuum nipple that goes to the distributor.

My question is this:
What should I do at this point? Find an OEM Cruiser carb? Rebuild this one? Use a different Toyota carb?

I'm on a budget

Budget I would find any old Rochester or Carter single barrel carb, wont be hard to adapt/ swap anything from the 60's and early 70's to work just fine ( I like the rochesters, just had good luck with them).

Should I just get a rebuild kit for this Carter carb and run it?

This is the F engine right? You could get an OE replacement, do the v6 TBI setup, or find a dirt cheap 5m or 7m with ecu to toss in there, the latter of which would be the most work obviously.

I'd prolly look into how much it would run you to toss together a TBI setup if you plan on keeping it a while.

I would, those single lung carbs are easier than most Briggs carbs to go thru.

Those are a piece of cake to rebuild...mind you, this is how restoration projects get started. ;)
